The reformist Parleman News website reported on Thursday that following a memorial service held in Ray city (Shahre Ray) south of Tehran, Mr Abtahi was attacked by a number of plain-clothed militia as he was leaving the service.
The website has cited Mr Abtahi’s personal Facebook page, in which he has explained the details of the attack. According to Abtahi’s Facebook post, he was attacked by plain-clothed militia on motorbikes after a vehicle suddenly blocked the route. The militia then attacked Mr Abtahi’s car using knives and cables. As a result, the car’s windows were broken and tear gas was thrown inside.
“I can say that I left the area with the broken glass and tear gas in a miraculous way. It was a very violent attack, no one came to help and they were very confident and dreaded nothing,” said Mr Abtahi.
The former Vice President also published photos of the incident.
