Khamenei pardons 81 post election detainees in Iran

Radio Zamaneh – 81 Iranian post-election detainees have been “pardoned or received reduced sentences” by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, according to the judiciary.

Head of Iran’s judiciary, Sadegh Larijani had put in the requests in a letter to Ayatollah Khamenei which met with the senior cleric’s approval.

Larijani has written that his list of detainees have all the necessary criteria to be pardoned or receive reduced sentences.

This is the first time the Islamic Republic Supreme Leader pardons a group of post-election detainees.

Earlier, some conservative Members of Parliament announced that those detainees who express “remorse and repent from their deeds” may become eligible for a pardon by the leader.

Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi, Prosecutor of Tehran also remarked this week that “those who repent from their post-election security crimes and ask to be pardoned may become eligible for a pardon and Islam’s mercy.”

In the post-election events, at least four thousand people including political and social activists as well as journalists and media collaborators were arrested.

Release of all post-election detainees is one of the top demands of Iran’s opposition and reformists.
