The families of a group of political prisoners on Tuesday paid a visit to Hashemi Rafsanjani, the current head of the powerful Experts Assembly on Leadership and the State Expediency Council. The families included those of prisoners Abdollah Momeni, Mohsen Mirdamadi, Mostafaj Tajzadeh, Mohammad Noorizadeh, Abdolreza Tajik and other political, media and student activists who had been arrested because of the post-2009 election events.
According to the official site of Hashemi Rafsanjani, he met with the families for some three and a half hours and concluded the meeting by saying, “If I communicate your requests to government authorities, I am not sure I will get a positive response and in fact this may produce the opposite response.”
But Rafsanjani also told his visitors that, “The esteemed leader had issued suitable instructions regarding the speedy examination of the prisoners’ cases and also on respecting their (i.e. political prisoners) legal rights, which could solve many of the current problems.” He further added that he would communicate their requests to ayatollah Khamenei, adding “I hope that this will not be a futile effort.”
A just examination of the suits against the political prisoners, respect for their rights in prison and the trial procedures by the responsible government agencies are among the demands that the families of political prisoners requested from the chairman of the Experts Assembly.
While no further official reports were filed on this meeting, informed sources told Rooz that among issues that Mr. Hashemi has been asked to raise with the leader of the Islamic Republic are the letters that Abdollah Momeni and Hamzeh Karami had written depicting the events that took place while they were in custody and the interrogation methods that were used.
Both of these individuals had been forced to make incriminating confessions under duress when they were in prison and in their letters have described how they were tortured, threatened to death, their heads pushed into toilet bowls, beatings, insults etc.
It is said that the letters were given to Mr. Rafsanjani who made positive promises to them regarding these.
