Monday September 27th, 2010 – According to Jaras, Isa Saharkhiz, journalist and member of the Central Council for the Defense of Freedom of Press, was sentenced to 3 years prison.
As per Jaras, based on the verdict rendered today and presented to Mr. Faghihi, Saharkhiz lawyer, Saharkhiz who was arrested in June last year and has been incarcerated since was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, banned from any political activities and involvement with the press for a period of 5 years, and banned from leaving the country for a period of 1 year.
Saharkhiz is currently incarcerated in Rajai Shahr prison in the city of Karaj and despite his illness and recommendations by doctors that he receive medical treatment, he has not been allowed temporary leave from prison as of yet.
Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court handed down the maximum sentence under the Islamic Penal Code for insulting the leadership and propaganda against the regime (2 years and 1 year respectively). In addition, Saharkhiz was banned for 5 years from any political activities or involvement with the press and will not be able to leave the country for a period of 1 year.
