GVF — Just days ahead of International Worker’s Day (May 1st), the Coordination Council of the Green Path of Hope has expressed its support for Iranian workers and once more voiced previously voiced concerns by Green Movement Mir Hossein Mousavi regarding the workers’ right to organise, mobilise and protest.

In its statement, the Council, which is the Green Movement’s highest decision-making body said that in recent years, “instead of privatising, the government has been carrying out a monopolisation, and has been giving away firms and businesses to quasi-governmental and quasi-military bodies for trifling sums, and thus through the concentration of power and wealth in their own hands, they persist in their monocracy.”

The Council, whose members have been chosen by the leader of the Green Movement Mir Hossein Mousavi and Karroubi prior to their house arrest, has also urged the media and social networks to play support the demands of Iran’s workers and sympathise with the country’s labour force which has been hard hit by the Ahmadinejad administration’s disastrous economic policies, in particular its recent subsidy cuts which have had a devastating effect on the country’s most vulnerable.

“Having in mind the economic hardships and demands of hard-working labourers, and under the status quo where the state does not tolerate any level of criticism towards the current situation, the Coordination Council of the Green Path of Hope urges all media and social networks to reflect the heart rendering tragedies which have made life more difficult for the various groups in people. While stressing the indisputable rights of workers to voice their demands and fully supporting [the right to hold] demonstrations and assemblies, in accordance with annual custom, the Council calls on all the supporters and activists of this pervasive popular movement not to hesitate in supporting the demands of this land’s brave workers as well as sympathising with and aiding them.”

The statement also argues, “without resolving the flaws in the country’s political system, it is not possible to speak of any economic revival.”

Referring to the false promises made by Ahmadinejad during the 2009 presidential race, the council added: “If at that time, there were still those who did not believe the government would deceive, today the state’s lies have become so apparent for all, that not only farmers, workers and labourers, but everywhere in this poverty stricken country filled with misery despite having the largest amount of underground resources and social capital, they no longer believe their empty promises.”

“The country’s hard workers saw how the problem of housing and unemployment not only remained unresolved, but intensified,” the statement said. “The people of this land have witnessed how the oil revenue not only didn’t find its way into their dinner tables, but their dinner tables shrank by the day.”

“Strikes and protests by workers are taking place everyday and across the country, despite the [government’s] violent action,” the council noted. “A charity-like economy, whose harmful and undignified consequences government critics had warned about, is shattering the hopes of workers and employers and has brought the wheels of the country’s economy to a standstill these days.”

The Coordination Council of the Green Path of Hope also criticised the Ahmadinejad government’s irresponsible mismanagement of oil revenues of the past six years, which has been more than 500 million dollars, more than Iran’s oil revenues under all the previous administrations put together. It also said the income had been “used for the unrestricted import of low-quality goods.”

“It is as though the goal of this great Revolution [in 1979] was to become independent of one superpower, but to become reliant on another.”

The council also dismissed the unemployment and growth rates announced by the Ahmadinejad government as “baseless,” arguing that “out honourable workers feel the country’s critical economic situation with their flesh and bone and the baselessness of the government statistics about economic growth are comprehensible for them, more than any other social group.”

“It is natural that in such circumstances, the 850,000 jobs per year that were to be created under the fourth development programme are not created, but rather, we’ve had a rise in unemployment. Can one imagine the hiring of new workers by a production unit that hasn’t received any new investment and its sales and profits have also remained the same?”

“The reality is that the militarisation of the economy and politics in recent years has crippled the Iran’s economy,” the statement went on to add. “Tens of thousands of workers across the country have not received their wages in months. Their basic rights such as the right to carry out union activity, the right to protest against working conditions, the demand for a wage increase that matches the increase in inflation, the ability to earn a living through working for a single shift per day and the right to influence their destiny are being neglected through [the government’s] resort to all types of cunning measures. Iranians see their greatest asset; the hope for a better future, shattered and their greatest God-given gift, their human dignity, stumbled upon.”

“Iran is a great country with massive natural resources as well as experts, workers and creators of job opportunities who can return the country to the position it deserves, should their right to determine their own destiny be returned to them.”

Unemployment in Iran on the rise

August 3, 2010 – According to the statistics published by the Statistical Center of Iran and Iran Central Bank, the unemployment rate in Iran has started rising since Fall 2008 and has reached 11.9% by March 2010, the largest in the past six years. While the real rate of unemployment stands higher, even the official numbers point to the increase.

According to the latest statistics, 21 provinces in the country show increase in the unemployment rate for 2009 compared with 2008. Across the country, the rate of unemployment shows an increase of 1.5% from 10.4 to 11.9% in that period. In twenty two provinces in the country, the rate has been in two digits while only 8 provinces have been able to check the rate to a single digit. Overall, the unemployment rate shows increase in 21 provinces and decline in 9. In 13 provinces, the increase in the rate has been between 1.9 to 4 percent. The province with the highest unemployment rate is that of Lorestan which had an increase of 1.9 percent with 17.1% unemployment in 2008 reaching 19% in 2009.

Khabaronline, a conservative news site close to Ali Larijani, the parliament speaker, reports that ten Iranian economist believe the real rate of unemployment to be 14.6 percent compared with the official 11.9 percent and the number is to increase to 15.9% this year. The official data already records 12.3 in 2010 showing an increase in the first months of the year. Taking the base as 40 hours week of work, the unemployment rate will still show even a higher number.

The rate of unemployment amongst the youth stays higher with 24% of those between 15 to 24 having been unemployed last Fall. 87% of the unemployed are those between the ages of 15 to 30 and amongst the unemployed youth, 45% are those with university degrees.

According to a report by Aftab news site, “the massive layoffs have been picking up since the start of the new year – i.e. March 21 – in different production enterprises in the country. After the layoffs in Saman plant, it was the turn for the workers in Saghez telecommunications, next different enterprises in Eastern Azerbaijan to Kermanshah, Bushehr Iran Sadra, Ahvaz Pipes, Saveh Iran Tefal, Shomal Industrial Agriculture, Towzingar, Havayar, and hundreds of small and large workshops. Even large companies such as Iralco, National Lead and Zinc, and Pars Wagon have not been spared.”

According to the informed sources, Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA) reports, “all the large manufacturing plants are in the midst of terminating their contract employees, even skilled workers with 15 years of service are among the laid off. The managers of the bankrupt industrial giants are pressuring their full time workers to accept early retirements.”

ILNA adds, “even the new pole of capitalism in Iran, i.e. the revolutionary guards does not possess the necessary management and technical know how to run these plants and it was just recently that the Khatam al Anbiya Construction (associated with the guards) had to pull out of South Pars gas project because of the sanctions. Other individuals and firms tied to the guards are after projects in shipping, export and import and even contrabands. In fact, in the last five years, the guards have entered into all the lucrative markets in Iran in an organized fashion. However, due to the lack of technical know how amongst the guards’ associates and the dealer mentality governing their economic practices, these takeovers have resulted in sluggishness and the loss of productivity in the country.”

A battle won by the workers of Iran

Protest gathering of workers of Sazmayeh Factory (a brick making factory)
Pakdasht- July 21, 2010
About 200 fired temporary workers of Sazmayeh Factory gathered at the factory and their number increased each minute since morning of Wednesday July 21.
The fired workers demanded returning to work and receiving their unpaid wages.
Each of these fired workers must receive 15 to 20 million tomans from the factory.
The governmental managers affiliated with Ahmadinejad’s band have also fired old workers of the factory with years of history of work and have hired new workers to be able to violate the rights of the workers easily.
During last 5 months about 350 to 400 temporary workers of this factory have been fired and are in deplorable living conditions.
In addition to the fired workers some other workers of this factory have problems with their retirement status.

At 1030 Tehran’s time- July 21:
Instead of solving the problems of these deprived workers Ahamadinejad’s government deployed SSF to the factory.
The deputy of Intelligence and Security of the Province and the deputy governor of Pakdasht were present.
They tried to promise the workers so that they would stop their protest.
They told the workers that the factory will borrow money and will pay them in 15 days.
The workers shouted back that these were just lies for dispersing them again.
They said that they will stay at the factory until they get an answer for their demands.
The protesters prevented the workers from working saying that if the factory did have work to be done why did it fire them. “You did this just for not paying our wages” the workers said.

Protesting workers threw governmental managers out of the factory
The protesting workers said that they will disclose all the stealing of regime’s mafia-like bands with presentation of documents.
In continuation of their protest the workers threw the governmental managers out of the factory.
The workers said that if their rights are not met and their wages are not paid they will put the company for sale in the newspapers through auction. If until a week there would be no buyer for the company all the workers will gather together and buy it on price of 100 million tomans and will own it.
They emphasized that they will regain their rights from the government.
The members of Province’s Council became desperate and were trying to do something.
The workers said that they have a large bunch of documents about plundering and stealings of the governmental managers and other governmental authorities in Pakdasht in the Governor Office and other governmental organs.
They said that all the documents are creditable in legal organs and media and they can be pursuit.

Final agreement after the workers stood firm and ousted the governmental managers out of the factory
Due to the withstanding of the brave workers governor’s deputy was tasked on behalf of the head of judiciary of Pakdasht and the governor to get a one billion tomans loan and pay the wages of the workers.
Also some representatives of workers were appointed to put the factories mines on auction.
The resistance of the protesting workers made the governmental managers of the factory to pay their wages in 10 days otherwise the factory would be put on auction. The representative of the workers will bring a specialist in 3 days to evaluate the price of the factory.
Representatives of the workers said that they know that Ahmadinejad’s government will not solve their problems and lies to them all the time to buy time.
They added that they will stand until they gain their rights.

Osanloo’s Daughter in Law Miscarries Following Her Abduction and Beatings

Parvaneh Osanloo reports on the miscarriage of her daughter in law following her abduction and beatings by the intelligence ministry operatives. In an interview with the persian online magazine Rooz, Parvaneh Osanloo, Mansour Osanloo’s wife, has provided more information about the abduction and the motivation behind the pressures on Osanloo’s family.

Roozonline: Mrs. Osanloo, in the recent days, there have been several reports on the arrest and beatings of Ms. Zoya Samadi. Are you going to take a legal action regarding the incident?

Parvaneh Osanloo: Yes, definitely and we will make a formal complaint. Unfortunately, the incident happened on the eve of the weekend and three day break followed that, hence, we were not able to do much but definitely on Sunday we will take action and see whether for the first time these kind of issues will be looked into or not.

Roozonline: Why do you think such an incident has happened to a member of your family?

Parvaneh Osanloo: Just to create an atmosphere of terror for our family. They want to put pressure on Osanloo.

Roozonline: Mr. Osanloo is now in prison. Why should he be put on additional pressure?

Parvaneh Osanloo: This has to be answered by the gentlemen themselves. Why are they so afraid of Mansour who has been in jail for four years and why do they treat the family of one who is paying for his trade union activities in such a fashion?

Roozonline: Is your daughter in law involved in any political or social activity?

Parvaneh Osanloo: No, she is an engineer and is not involved in any particular activity. This incident is solely along the increased pressures on Mr. Osanloo that they have taken my innocent daughter in law and harmed her greatly, physically, mentally, and spiritually in order to intimidate Osanloo and us.

Roozonline: Do you know which organization or institution has been behind the incident?

Parvaneh Osanloo: No, Zoya has been blind folded and neither knows where she was taken nor do we know who they have been.

Roozonline: What have they specifically asked Zoya Samadi?

Parvaneh Osanloo: They have asked her to sign a paper and pledge that Mr. Osanloo would not engage in any activity following his release and would leave the country along with his family!

Roozonline: Has Mr. Osanloo been notified of the incident? What does he think?

Parvaneh Osanloo: Initially, we decided to not tell him anything. We did not want to add to his worries but he had heard the news and I then had to tell him everything. He was extremely pained and told us to pursue the issue legally and I have also promised him that we will definitely follow up on the incident.

Roozonline: Have these issues occurred before and had you received any threats?

Parvaneh Osanloo: My daughter in law was receiving threatening phone calls since last year. They had gone to his work place several times and even one time put a gun to her side and had threatened her. She was also summoned once to the [court] branch number 14; they, however, denied having had summoned her. But we never thought such an incident would occur. Mr. Osanloo is a trade union activist and has not done anything outside the bounds of law and order. He has always operated within the law and his daughter in law is also innocent. She has only seen Mr. Osanloo once during her engagement eve and has not even gone to the prison to visit Mr. Osanloo. She does not have anything to do with Mr. Osanloo’s activities. This incident was truly unimaginable to us.

Roozonline: On the incidents and the threats that you have mentioned since last year, have you particularly followed them up?

Parvaneh Osanloo: Yes, we have written several times to the head of the judiciary, Tehran prosecutor, and the citizen’s rights office in the judiciary and described all that has happened. But there has not been a single follow up. They neither contacted us nor pursued the cases and it all led to what we now have faced.

Roozonline: How is Ms. Samadi feeling physically and spiritually now?

Parvaneh Osanloo: Unfortunately, she has been hurt severely. She is still in a state of shock. She has not regained her psychological balance yet. Besides the nose bleed, and the injuries on her gums and teeth, my daughter in law was two months pregnant and we did not know this at all. She had severe bleeding and after looking further we noticed that she was two months pregnant and unfortunately she had a miscarriage.

Roozonline: These days there are rumors on possible releasing of Mr. Osanloo.

Parvaneh Osanloo: Mansour has now been in jail for four years and there is one more year left in his sentence. We have also heard these rumors but neither us nor Mansour has seen any indications on his release.

Roozonline: In what condition is Mr. Osanloo under currently?

Parvaneh Osanloo: Mansour is now in ward three of Rejaishahr prison in hall number 8. Unfortunately, his eyes need treatment as well as his heart is in need of Angiography. But they do not pay any attention.

Roozonline: With what you have described, what are the actions you will be taking?

Parvaneh Osanloo: We can not do much. We can only resort to the judiciary officials and wait for their follow ups. We do not feel safe at all. Similar problems could be instigated on any other member of our family at any moment. The incident for my daughter in law was an alarming incident for all of us. I ask the international human rights organs to come to our aid and not allow such measure be taken any where in the world. I say right here that if any one of the members of our family gets in danger or something happens to us, the judiciary authorities and the authorities of the Islamic Republic will be responsible for it.

The translation of the interview with Parvaneh Osanloo is provided by Iran Labor Report.
