Streets of Tehran flooded with security forces on 2nd anniversary of the rigged election of Ahmadinejad – June 12, 2011

June 12, 2011 – The streets of Tehran were flooded with security forces in anticipation of the planned “silent protests” marking the 2nd anniversary of the rigged election that brought Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term as President of Iran.  The Coordination Council of the Green Path of Hope, had called on protesters to march silently along Vali-Asr street and make their way to Vali-Asr Square.

Their are many reports that thousands of people were on Vali-Asr street trying to make their way to the Square.  The presence of security forces along the route was massive.  There were also reports of several clashes and many arrests.  The security forces harrassed  and videotaped people as they walked along the protest route.  Most shops along the way had been forced to close, along with the two large theatres in the area (Africa and Palestine).  Large contingents of Basij motorcycle units were patrolling the area and harassing, intimidating and arresting protestors.

Here you can see an extremely large contingent of security forces gathered on a small section of Vali-Asr street and the motorcycle units riding up on the sidewalk through protestors in an attempt to intimidate them.

A large contingent of Basij were holding up Bahraini Flags, anti-Saudi posters and chanting anti-Saudi slogans at Azadi Stadium where the Saudi football team was playing.  Some clashes ensued and the IRGC security had to step in and try to control the situation.  This prompted football fans to stand in protest against the basij and chant “Basij, leave the stadium” and “No Gaza, No Lebanon, my life only for Iran”

Cleric who leads prayers at the Presidents office and has close ties to Mashaei arrested

Scroll down for English translation…

Roozonline – May 2, 2011 – Abbas Amirifar, a figure famous for his support of Mashaei, was arrested. According to sources close to Amirifar, he had been orally summoned to the Evin prison, but refused to go because the summon was not in writing. Yesterday, however, Amirifar was arrested by an Islamic Passdaran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) security team at his residence, on the day of Ahmadineajd’s return to office after a ten-day absence, where he thanked the supreme leader for supporting his administration and affirmed the tenth administration’s adherence to Velayat-e Faghih [rule of clerics].

Amirifar was the subject of several news stories on the web last week, both for his interviews in support of Mashaei, and for attending his father-in-law’s funeral, which was attended by prominent reformist figures, such as Behzad Nabavi and members of the reformist Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution organization.

Amirifar, who leads prayers at the president’s office, had told the daily Shargh in support of Mashaei, “I see Mr. Mashaei as someone who will have a lot to say in the future; of course, if they allow him to. You must take a look at how these public servants are treated. The state-run media is opposed to him, and a large number of Principalist newspapers attack him with all they have.”

He added, “Once I was running a meeting when Mr. Mashaei came to resolve some of the controversies. About 250 seminary students were there. He answered questions for three hours on his feet and with admirable patience, which impressed everyone. See, Mr. Mashaei wouldn’t agree to sit. He said it would be rude to sit among scholars. They asked him the harshest questions and he would answer with patience. Our religious leaders teach us that patience is an admirable quality, and he showed that he has that quality. In face, he was so patient that sometimes I would get mad by some of the pointed questions. The attacks on Mr. Mashaei are so harsh that the supreme leader says in his recent visit to Qom, I don’t believe that he [Mashaei] pits Iran against Islam, but they don’t publish that remark because it’s not in their interest.  In the same interview, Amirifar said, “We believe that the Principalist movement has become like the traditional conservative movement; that it has lost its flavor. The traditional conservative movement has its allure for the people. Mr. Ahmadinejad announced that he is not concerned with these groups. All of the Principalist factions were opposed to Mr. Ahmadinejad’s candidacy. They all supported either Larijanir or Ghalibaf in 2005. Even if they supported Ahmadinejad in the second round, the only reason was that they were opposed to Hashemi Rafsanjani.”

Iran expands Basij Organization and separates it from IRGC

According to reports, to better control the suppression of protesters, the Bassij Organization has been expanded and separated from the Revolutionary Guards Corps. It will be directly under the control of Khamenei. Until now, the Bassij Organization was a unit of the IRGC and its commander was appointed by the commander in chief. In this new organizational chart, the Bassij works parallel to the IRGC and will work under the direct supervision of Khamenei like the IRGC.

New commander chosen for Khamenei’s protection guard

It was announced about 10 days ago that Brigadier General Ibrahim Jabari has been appointed as the new commander of Khamenei’s protection guards. The reason behind this appointment was not announced.

Background info:

Khamenei’s protection guard known as the Vali Amr Corps consists of 12,000 people. Ibrahim Jafari was appointed as the head of the Zanjan IRGC Base after the Iran Iraq war as a second brigadier. He was chosen as the head of the Qazvin IRGC Base in 2002 and in this post, suppressed the people in this city for six years. Seven months before the elections in 2009, Jabari was transferred to Tehran and was appointed as the deputy commander of the IRGC in Tehran. Eleven days before the elections, he was elected as deputy to the head of the Bassij, Hossein Taeb.

In this time, from June 15 to Aug. 16, 2009, the Bassij directly controlled everything in the capital along with the RGC and suppressed the post-election protests. In the first six months after the elections, Jabari acted as the senior deputy to Taeb in violently suppressing the protests. He has close contacts with Mesbah Yazdi. Jabari went to Qom on November 17, 2009 on orders of the head of the IRGC in Iran, Mohammad-Ali Jafari, and became the IRGC commander in this town. In the 12 months of his command, there were many protests in Qom. He played a major part in suppressing these protests. This IRGC official who has a history in suppression and committing crimes against the people has been chosen as the new head of protection for Khamenei.
