اطلاعیۀ بیت آیت الله العظمی منتظری در سالگرد ارتحال معظم له /Ayatollah Montazeri’s Memorial called off due to ‘Securiy Concerns’

The family of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, have announced that commemorations for the first anniversary of the death of the late cleric will not be held due to the “lack of security” and “concerns about a repeat of the events of last year.”

According to a statement released by the “House of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri” On Friday, no memorial service will be held to mark the one-year anniversary of the passing away of the senior cleric who was viewed by many as the spiritual leader of Iran’s Green Movement.

The statement described the late Grand Ayatollah as a person who “did not speak or act against his beliefs” and added that the “enormity and magnificence of his burial [ceremony last year] demonstrated that the widespread and continuous propaganda against him in the past twenty years had not only been ineffective, but rather showed his popularity among the people” which led the “ill wishers” to prevent a memorial service from being held in his honour.

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, Iran’s most senior religious cleric, had been the designated successor to the Islamic Republic’s founder Imam Khomeini in the 80s. However, following his falling out with Imam Khomeini and his objection to the mass executions of political prisoners in the late 80s, the senior cleric was stripped of his position and became an outspoken critic of the Islamic Republic. On different occasions, he also questioned the credentials of current leader Ali Khamenei as a religious authority, something that led to his house arrest in 1997.

During the post-election unrest after Iran’s rigged 2009 presidential election, the late cleric was a vocal supporter of the Green Movement and its goals.

Following his death in December 2009, tens of thousands took part in a procession in the holy city of Qom. His passing away sparked massive protests in his place of residence Qom as well as Tehran and other major Iranian cities. Mourners were beaten up by security forces and imprisoned for months.

In the months that followed, plain-clothed militia and state thugs also raided and looted the office of the late Grand Ayatollah after which it finally was shut down.

The statement issued by the Montazeri family stressed that “even under the last [Pahlavi] regime, the homes of clerics had a certain level of sanctity and they were places of sanctuary for the families of political prisoners; but unfortunately, in the era governed in the name of the Islamic Republic, there is no longer any safe [sanctuary], to the extent that there is no security for holding a ceremony to honour a cleric who was himself, among the founders of this [political] system.”

The statement added that no ceremony would be held to mark the one-year anniversary of the cleric’s death, “in order to prevent a repeat of last year’s incidents and the arrests and beatings” and expressed hope for the release of the many “innocent” political prisoners in the country.

سید محمد خاتمی: کجاست عدالت؟ / Seyyed Mohammad Khatami: Where Is Justice?

Former President Mohammad Khatami, in a meeting with the members of central council of youth fraction and academia of National Trust (Etemad-Melli, Karroubi’s party) party on June 15th, the anniversary of the epic day that millions of peaceful protestors took to the streets following the rigged presidential elections, said: “June 15th is a great day because it is linked to electing and elections.”

He added: “:June 15th is one of the epic days that people came to the scene spontaneously and in the most civilized way that one can imagine and this is the sign of the maturity of our nation that this massive crowd came to the scene in complete peace and without any tension and organizing and announced their glorious presence.”

Khatami added: “June 15th could be and still can be a foundation for a kind of directed unity to achieve the values of the Islamic Revolution, meaning the rule of people on their own destiny.”

In another part of his remarks Khatami while expresseing sorrow and condemning the insults and attacks on Mehdi Karroubi and Grand Ayatollah Saanei by a group of organized thugs during Karroubi’s visit to the holy city of Qom, praised the characters of Grand Ayatollah Saanei and Mehdi Karroubi.

Khatami also stressed that today we are witnessing a particular movement and thought in the society that claims itself as the center and base of the Islamic Revolution and unfortunately by any means possible is ready to eliminate its critics and competitions and for strengthening its rule is abusing all the resources.

In another part of his remarks Khatami by pointing to the biased performance of the Guardian Council said: “Today we see that those organizations that should confirm the qualifications of the candidates (who run for public office) are massively rejecting many qualified individuals based on their own scale and limit people’s power to choose and this is a great damage to the revolution and system that Imam [Khomeini] founded; or we can see the same trend of thoughts in the security and judiciary confrontations that exist in the society today or in the state-run TV and radio programs and these issues exist in practice which makes it very dangerous.”

Khatami added: “The outcome of this method that they shutdown all paths in the political scene so that only one particular movement can exist and restrict the social scene and by unethical means but yet organized, put pressure on all groups, is creating despondency in various classes of the people.”

Khatami stressed: “Where is justice? Today are people’s lives easier or harder? Those who are against this trend are caring for the revolution and society not those who are portraying the image of Imam [Khomeini] and the system in a bad way.”

At the end Khatami added: “We should all get united and think of a solution because these behaviors and methods are not right and those who insult, falsely accuse others, use violence and destroy should be stopped.”

اطلاعیه میرحسین موسوی پیرامون ۲۲ خرداد امسال و نیز هتک حرمت بیوت مراجع /Mousavi’s statement on June 12th events and the attack on Marjas

Mir Hossein Mousavi in reaction to the attacks on the residences of Maraje (the highest ranking religious spiritual leaders) in a statement considered these actions the result of the need of the ruling powers to create distractions in order to hide the disasters they have caused for the country from people’s eyes. He also considered this year’s Khordaad 22nd (June 12, the anniversary of rigged presidential election) the sign of the Green movement’s maturity and wisdom. The full statement is as follows:

In the name of God

Refusing to issue permit for rally on Khordad 22nd (June 12th) more than anything showed the fear of the government from the repeat of the epic of Khordad 25, 1388 (June 14, 2009).  The unprecedented array of security and armed forces in Tehran showed that even after a year of suppression, imprisonment, partisan use of the IRIB (the state-run televisions and radios), government’s media and spending billions, the totalitarians could not convince people  that they have sincerity and truth in their actions.  As if they could, why would they have need for all these expenses, bringing forces, and spreading lies?

Attacks on the people and students on Khordad 22nd and then  the attacks on the residences of great Marja, Grand Ayatollah Saanei and on the office of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and insults to Hojat-al-Islam Karroubi revealed the extent of mental crisis and unrest among the attackers.  On this year’s Khordad 22nd, people didn’t give any excuse to the government to hide the outcomes of the Security Council’s resolution 1929 that was enforced on our country and nation because of bad management and populist policies and to make people forget the consequences of the double-faced and unjustified actions during the Khordaad 14 commemoration.*

Khordaad 22nd showed the maturity of the great Green movement and showed that every Green citizen wherever he or she is, at home, office, workplace, factory, school or on streets, with innovation and originality, is a movement on his or her own.

The Green movement has the wisdom to not act in a way that the totalitarians can hide the outcomes of their wrong policies in economy, culture, politics and foreign affairs.  Today, the ruling powers need more than ever to create distractions to hide the consequences of the disasters that they have brought on the country from the people’s eyes.

Attacks on the office of a respected Marja and one of the beloved students of Imam [Khomeini] is a new stage of these kinds of tension creations.  But those who ordered and those who executed such a dangerous act must know that attack on Marjas and insulting and putting pressure on them only destroy the legitimacy of the establishment.

Have they forgotten that it was the attack on Imam [Khomeini’s] house [by Shah’s forces] that laid the foundations to eliminate the bases of despotism on 15 June 1963 and then later on February 1979, and they still do not take lessens from these?!

Is it based on these historical experiences that you still sit on the branches and cut the roots?!

گزارش تفصیلی از حمله سازماندهی شده روز گذشته به کروبی در قم / Update: Detailed report of the attack on Karroubi in Qom

Mehdi Karroubi who had traveled to the city of Qom visited Grand Ayatollah Saanei, pro-reform senior reformist figure, at 2:00PM local time yesterday June 13. According to report by SahemNews short time after Mehdi Karroubi arrived at the house of Grand Ayatollah Saanei a group of organized thugs gathered in front of the house of the Grand Ayatollah and started chanting slogans against Mehdi Karroubi and Grand Ayatollah Saanei. According to these reports these plain clothes thugs attacked the car of Mehdi Karroubi with chains and batons and severely damaged it. Also these individuals by throwing stone at the house of Grand Ayatollah Saanei vandalized the building. In continuation the thugs chanted slogans against Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, grandson of late Ayatollah Khomeini the founder of Islamic Republic, Grand Ayatollah Saanei, Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi and in support for the supreme leader.

According to this report Mehdi Karroubi at 6:30PM local time after leaving the house of Grand Ayatollah Saanei first went to the house of Ahmad Montazeri, the eldest son of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri who was the spiritual leader of the Green Movement, then visited Saeed Montazeri, another son of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, and finally went to the house of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri.

Unfortunately when Mehdi Karroubi was visiting the family of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri these thugs by attacking and throwing stones at the house of late Grand Ayatollah broke the windows and severely vandalized the building.

Mehdi Karroubi because of this mob attack on the house of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and the request by the Revolutionary Guards, police and security forces of the city of Qom at 11:30PM moved to the building owned by Revolutionary Guards and next to the house of the later Grand Ayatollah and finally with arrangements of the security forces of the city of Qom at 4:00 AM on Monday June 14 left the Revolutionary Guards’ building and returned to Tehran.

Mehdi Karroubi travelled to the city of Qom yesterday to visit with Grand Ayatollah Saanei and Seyyed Hassan Khomeini.

گزارش تهاجم نیروهای لباس شخصی به دفتر آیت الله العظمی منتظری، و پلمب دفتر / Report: Attack on office of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri

The report of the attack by the plain clothes thugs on the office of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and the shutting down of his office by authorities:

In the name of God

On Sunday, 13 June 2010, the thugs attacked the offices of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and Grand Ayatollah Saanei.

This attack that started at 4:00PM local time with the excuse of Mehdi Karroubi’s travel to the city of Qom continued until late night with breaking the windows of the offices of the Grand Ayatollahs and chanting slogans, and eventually ended in invasion of the office and vandalizing the property at 4:00AM on Monday, 14 June 2010. The attackers did not spare any kind of insult.

It should be mentioned that these attacks happened following the repeated summoning and threats against myself, Ahmad Montazeri, by the intelligence office and the Special Court for clergy in Qom with the aim to shutdown the office of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and stop paying salaries [through his fund] to the clerics.

The interesting point here is the presence and silence of the police and special security forces and the complete coordination between them and the plain clothes militia! In this attack all the items of the office were damaged and the photos of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri were torn up and insulted.
They broke office’s windows, chairs and even the television set, torn down the curtains and by hanging from the ceiling fan and treading down the vacuum cleaner damaged them.

Following these attacks on the morning of Monday, 14 June 2010, about 12 individuals from intelligence forces with a court order from the Special Court for the Clergy in Qom came to the office of the late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and searched the office, confiscated the damaged items and shutdown and sealed the office; and by this action approved all the destructive actions of those who attacked. This is while one would expect from the security forces to control the plain clothes individuals and bring security to the area, but unfortunately not even one of the thugs was arrested!

Video: Banoo Rabbani’s funeral (wife of the late Ayatollah Montazeri) in Qom,Iran مراسم خاکسپاری بانو ربانی

Funeral of Lady Rabbani, the wife of the late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, the spiritual leader of the Green Movement

According to Jaras website, Saeed Montazeri, son of late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri (The spiritual leader of the Green Movement), in an interview said that the burial ceremony of his mother was held under heavy security presence and the security forces not only did not let the grieving family have their final goodbye but they took the lifeless body and buried her in another location than what was the wish of her family! In this interview Saeed Montazeri said that a large number of the people were present in the shrine of Holiness Hazrat Masoumeh (the sister of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Shias) where the family of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri announced would be the final resting place of their mother, since early in the morning to pay their respect and participate in the burial ceremony but the security forces and plain clothes militia had also a very heavy presence since early in the morning and by intimidation and creating an atmosphere of fear without any respect for the grieving family practically did not allow the burial and funeral ceremony to take place in the Shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh and tens of security vehicles brought the lifeless body of the wife of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri in the shrine under heavy security and without letting the people or even the family members getting close to it for the final goodbye after a very short stop took her body out of the shrine immediately. Saeed Montazeri added: These guys neither accepted the conditions of our family for the burial ceremony of our mother nor let the people of even the family members get close to the body of our departed mother and they did not even let us hold a simple and small funeral ceremony in silence despite their previous promise. Saeed Montazeri by pointing out the fear of the government agents even from a lifeless body of a departed 80 year old lady and her funeral ceremony emphasized: By this regrettable action they clearly demonstrated their fear and showed that they are even afraid of a lifeless body and her burial ceremony. He added: They not only did not let us hold the ceremony but they did not even let us bury our departed mother where the family wanted. According to this report the mourning people who were gathered in the Shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh where she was supposed to be buried when realized that the body was going to be buried in another location despite the wish of her family by chanting slogans showed their objection and tried to stop this which because of the immediate action of the security forces in taking the body out of the shrine and the heavy security presence Ahmad Montazeri, the eldest son of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, in order to prevent clashes and violent confrontations against the people or arrests asked the people to go to the governmental approved burial place in cemetery. However according to reports security forces arrested a number of mourning people who were more active in the ceremony and were chanting slogans. The angry people despite the far distance from the Shrine to the burial place walked all the way to the cemetery while chanting slogans such as Today if the day of grief; the Green people of Iran are grieving and God is Great. Saeed Montazeri emphasized that: The governmental agents and the countless security forces that were present, by applying force and intimidation, buried the body of our departed mother however they wanted and wherever they wanted and practically made it impossible for us and the people to hold funeral ceremony. Regardless of all the efforts by governmental agents and security forces, today many of the supporters and devotees of the late Grand Ayatllah Montazeri, the spiritual leader of the Green Movement, and his noble family by grieving for the departure of Grand Ayatollahs wife at her final resting place showed their unspoken sorrow.

Intelligence officials trying to prevent funeral of the late Ayatollah Montazeri’s wife

Green Voice of Freedom – Despite Grand Ayatollah Montazeri’s sons’ announcement that they plan to hold their mother’s funeral procession on Sunday from their house to Qom’s holy shrine, security officials have opposed such a move.

Following the passing away of Gran Ayatollah Montazeri’s wife Ms Rabbani, the late Ayatollah’s website announced that a funeral procession would be held on Sunday at 10am local time. However, Ayatollah Montazeri’s son, Ahmad Montazeri has said that officials from the Iranian intelligence and the Special Clerical Court of Qom have asked the family to confine the funeral to the burial site.

“I told them not to create problems for the regime and yourselves,” Ahmad Montazeri told the BBC. “With the Nowrouz holidays, the funeral will not be so big [anyway], and with your actions, you are creating problems for the regime, the people, and us.”

“Unfortunately they didn’t accept it.”

According to Mr Montazeri, security officials have ordered the family to carry the body of their deceased mother to the cemetery by car and for mourners to pay their respects from a distance of 150 meters.

“This is abnormal, and we have not accepted. We plan to hold the ceremony as we had previously announced,” he said.

Ayatollah Montazeri, who died in December 2009, was considered as the spiritual leader of the Green Movement and his death sparked a new wave of protests in Iran. Authorities prevented mourners from to commemorate his death in many cities, fearing a further spread of demonstrations.
