According to their close relatives, Mir Hossein Mousavi, prime minister during the eight year holy war with Iraq, contacted his family briefly yesterday and informed them of the well being of himself and his wife Zahra Rahnavard.  During this brief telephone conversation, Mousavi stated that he and his wife remain at their home, denying the rumors that they have been transferred to an undisclosed location.

Mousavi also explained that this was the first opportunity he had been given to make a phone call and asked how everyone was doing. Mousavi had also contacted his family briefly on Thursday.

During Thursday’s brief telephone conversation, Mousavi informed his relatives that his body guards had been dismissed and replaced by security officers and that the new security personnel was now also in charge of providing them with food. He also stated that neither he nor his wife Zahra Rahnavard have access to even local newspapers.

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard have been in house arrest since February 14th, 2011 [25 Bahman 1389], a house arrest that began after Mousavi published a message [thanking the honorable people of Iran for their large presence in the streets and extending his condolences to the families of the two Green martyred on that day] and led to his residence being surrounded and he and his wife becoming incommunicado.

All phones and internet connection at Mousavi’s residence remain cut off. According to his close relatives, except for the brief telephone contact yesterday and on Thursday, there has been no other contact with them to date.

بیانیه موسوی و کروبی به مناسبت پیروزی انقلاب: در نهایت، بسیج و سپاه و نیروهای نظامی، ملت خود را تنها نخواهند گذاشت / Mousavi and Karroubi issue statement for anniversary of the Islamic revolution (22 Bahman 1389)

Scroll down for full English translation…

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi in a joint statement issued marking the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution while  making comparisons between the current situation of the country and the oppressions people were suffering during the Shah’s era, more than 30 years ago, which resulted in the Islamic Revolution, urged the military, police, Revolutionary Guards and  Basij to side with the people.

Full text of the statement By Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi is as follows:

In the name of God, The Compassionate and the Merciful

By the declining day, (1) Lo! Man is a state of loss, (2) Save those who believe and do good works, and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance. (3)”  (The Holy Quran, Sura: Al-Asr, Verses: 1 to 3)

We are on the eve of the 32th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, a revolution that was a glorious reflection of people’s determining their own destiny. Understanding and recognizing this great and significant historic event is very important for each and every one of Iranians: maybe because understating the historical identity of any nation is influential in determining the future path of that nation or maybe because these days [people] ask themselves how correct was the path that was taken [in the past], or maybe because today more than any other time we are witnessing the efforts determined to distort this history.

What we witnessed during those days, was not only a transfer of political power but it was rather the start of a new discourse and the end of an old one: an old discourse that assumed it could survive by shutting down all paths to gradual reform in the government and society; by relying on the foreign governments supported coup d’état and the negligence of those devoted to this land, by  imprisoning great numbers of freedom-seekers, by imposing censorship on media; by making the power monger allies of the regime rich from oil revenue, by getting armed to the teeth with all sorts of weapons, by utilizing a loud propaganda machine, by creating the illusion of being influential in the affairs of the region and world, by taking the opposition and critics for granted and only considering themselves and their allies, by imagining their power as a splendor symbol of the divine authority while it was not supported by the people.

However, the new discourse following the depraved coup d’état of August 19, 1953 (known as 28 Mordad coup) began the day after the movement started on 1962. It was the start of an era of reviewing the past events and searching for a rescue path from the dictatorship that was ruling the country with the support of the colonial [foreign powers]. Despite those who had no hope for the change, despite those who interpreted expediency such that it would justify their desire to fulfill their own personal interests and despite those whom the hollow fear tactics of the government intimidated,  there were also many who never gave up trying, because they believed that living is not only staying alive. They knew that other nations had to take a long path in order to achieve freedom, justice, independence and prosperity; and trying to achieve a society that is blessed with these, is the very definition of living; so when they found their demands in the views of a strong leader like Imam Khomeini, who was determined in this path, they joined him and prevailed to end oppression and tyranny. Given the past experiences, from the very next day after the Revolution, women and men, young and old, all had concerns in their hearts on how to guard and protect this great achievement from another coup, military attack and most important of all, diversions from the principles of the Islamic Revolution that would break this young establishment.

The lessons that were learned from this event and the years followed, for many times made our people demonstrate their will in order to prevent any diversion in the path that could have taken them to their goals. The widespread participations in defending the homeland against the hostile enemy (Referring to the Iran-Iraq war), impressive efforts to achieve economic prosperity [following the eight-year war], efforts to have extensive reforms in various areas and wise participations in elections are the reflection of our people’s honor for the national responsibility that puts our people on the forefront of the intellectual and social developments of the region in the past few decades.

The new discourse had to make itself compatible with new demands and preserve its flow with continuous monitoring against the reemergence of tyranny and magisterial relations. We remember that the main concern of the Assembly of Constitution Experts was to find ways that could prevent the emergence of any form of tyranny, autocracy and dictatorship and the constitution was written when outside of the Assembly of [Constitution] Experts, people were chanting “Equality, Justice, [Imam] Ali’s just state” on the streets.

According to “The Saffein Battle” book by Nasr-Ebn-Mazahem, which might be the oldest narrative-historic book about Saffein war, after Imam Ali established his government in Kufa (Iraq), he had a trip to the areas where Persians were living near Kufa and in a town asked people about Persian kings. The person with most seniority in that town responded: In the traditions of Persian kings there were some things for the benefit of the people and some things for the benefit of the king, until Khosro-Parviz (one of the Persian kings) came to power and eliminated anything that was for the benefit of the people and kept all that were for the benefit of the king and this lead to demise of his kingdom.

This narrative precisely describes the psychological and political atmosphere of the country in the first decade after the revolution, regardless of the flaws and obstinacies that affects any revolution: the goal of the people who participated in the revolution was to eliminate these kinds of traditions by following Imam Ali’s just governing.

Isn’t it painful that after more than thirty years since the revolution, people’s concern is once again dealing with the reemergence of the same magisterial relations and this time in the name of the religion? We are in a situation that the people’s rights which have been described in the constitution and were the values of the revolution are being violated; the third chapter of the constitution, in which the rights of the nation are stated, has become a footnote and whatever is to the benefit of the rulers has been executed in an exaggerated manner and in many folds; and unquestionable obedience in front of the power has become divine and godly, and not questioning the ruling power has become value;  and with ridiculous comparisons, any criticizing and objecting voice has been accused of being an agent and ally of foreigners and Zionism, and has been accused of infidelity; so much so, that today the country’s political scene has nothing short from the danger of the recreation of the magisterial relations but the hereditary of the government.

Certainly the [presidential] election of the year ’88 (2009) was a sign of this sense of the public responsibility in front of the dangers. The people who were fearful, the people who were disappointed from the incompetency of the country’s management system, the people who were tired of lies, the people who felt that for country’s development more extensive and more fundamental transformations are needed, came to the scene; and perhaps many who had not been participating in any election for years broke their silence this time, and perhaps many who surpassed the routine political competitions and became united to create a great change.

It is a pity that what happened to the result of the election and what happened after the semi-coup by the totalitarians harmed the fundamental right of the nation to determine its own destiny.  However, arresting protestors, beating them on streets, killing many of the youths, women and men on streets and in prisons, the disasters of [Tehran] university’s dormitory and Kahrizak [prison], attacking homes and offices of Maraje (senior religious figures), holding shameful carnivals and (government organized) parades in order to create fear, constant struggle to divert public’s attention toward unimportant issues and diversions, unethical treatment of the families of the martyrs and [political] prisoners, and announcing the annihilation of the Green Movement in repeated occasions; none has managed to save the authoritarians from the great challenge of the lack of public’s trust, just as none has managed to make people forget their rightful demand of achieving the citizenship rights asserted in the constitution.

During these months, important events have happened that interest any informed observer. Many of those who were employed at army, police and security forces couldn’t trade the time they spent at the war fronts and their devotions for protecting the borders and the country’s security, and suppress and beat innocent people. Some because of reservation or lack of information and some simple people because of the government’s propaganda, used to think that the protesters were aiming their religious beliefs but gradually realized that this is not the case. Many, who used to think that the protest movement of the people was initiated by the conspiracy of the foreign domineering powers or the brutes that at the peak of the war sought refuge in the arms of the enemy and served it, realized that this was nothing but a trick to defame critics and justify the inhumane actions of the authoritarians.

And we don’t believe it would take long before those who are truly concerned about the national interests and Islamic values stand alongside the entire nation (or as the totalitarians call ” dirt and dust”) and separate their line from that of the power mongers, the violators of people’s rights and the greedy  of nations resources  . We especially believe that at the end, Basij and Islamic Republic’s Revolutionary Guards and the armed forces will not leave their nation alone.

In the recent years and especially the past two years, a new discourse was born and nothing can stop its growth: a discourse that does not tolerate corruption and with the promise of bringing oil [revenue] to the people’s table, does not increase the price of bread, fuel, electricity and gas many folds overnight; a discourse that believes in protecting the country’s labor force and does not ruin national resources and products by handing in the national market to foreign imports; a discourse that wants dignity for workers and employers, not humility; a discourse that the considers addiction, theft, and divorce the results of thirty percent unemployment rate of the youths and therefore does not tackle the problem of crimes and offences by establishing gallows and historic brutality; and with the excuse of crime and betrayal of a small group, start a new era of repentant, getting forced confessions and torturing in the prisons (Truly how many women can you, those who every day and every hour claim to be concerned for Islam and religion, name to have been executed at the early days of Islamic state during [the time of prophet Mohammad]?); a discourse that is not afraid of the people’s vote and is not terrified of referring to the constitution; a discourse that, not in slogan and Machiavellistic form, but rather in action attempts for Islamic unity and closeness of Islamic sections, and does not repulse millions of Iranian citizens from their own rights for being Sunni, Darvish, Ahle-Hagh or others.

Yes, a new discourse is born today: A discourse that those who were martyred for its values are its leaders and those who were imprisoned for its values are its flag bearers; a discourse that condemns violence and pursues change through peaceful means; a discourse that responds to lies, false accusations and insults with truth, honesty and good manners; a discourse that does not have hopes in [the outcome of] the secret games of the international powers and considers the clear national solution as the only path toward reforms; a discourse that does not follow the ideology of “Us vs Them” but rather tries to turn “Them” into “Us”; a discourse that recognizes all voices and does not see the national unity in absolute silence but rather see it in relying on the collective rationality; a discourse that does not consider the people as outsiders when it comes to what is happening in the country but rather tries to spread awareness among all layers of the society and to every corner of this land; a discourse that by empowering social networks brings people together and expands the civil atmosphere; a discourse that has become a role model for many other freedom-seeking movements; a discourse that criticizes past mistakes but does not deny its clear achievements; a discourse that does not see justice in charity-based economics but rather in providing equal opportunities and empowering the disadvantaged; a discourse that instead of spreading hatred and retribution among the poor and rich, rural and urban, ethnic groups and different religions promotes tolerance, understanding and mercy; a discourse that tries to end the era of empowering thugs and instead is after establishing an era in which those qualified are empowered so that in light of that prosperity and growth of talents lay grounds for the progress of this land to a stature that it deserves; a discourse that is not after finding hero saviors but rather wants every Iranian play a role in saving his or her country; a discourse that its leaders are as many as those who believe in it; a discourse that considers preserving the system is preserving the values that the system was established based on, not preserving the individuals in power; a discourse that believes circulation of power, accountability in front of the people and equality in front of the law are the assurance for having a healthy [society] and foundations for progress; a discourse that believes honoring [both] “Islam” and “Republic” pillars of the system as well as having democracy in all affairs of the country are the only way which will guide the people to prosperity; a discourse in which personal decisions and interests are replaced with collective wisdom; a discourse that believes in a God that wants human dignity and follows the path of hope through seeking-justice, good deeds, patience and perseverance, and has faith that good will prevail and evil will fail.

Today by creating a concern that without its existence the religion will be destroyed and by repeatedly warning about this [so-called] danger, the government tries to mobilize and unite the religious layers [of the society] behind itself; while in fact what has most damaged the religious atmosphere in the society is the oppressive and anti-religion actions of the government. The foundations of all divine religions are based on human nature and if Islam has lasted after fourteen centuries, it is because it has strong intrinsic roots, so much so that even the attack of Mongols and the actions of Pahlavi the first could not destroy it. This religion has thought us not to bow to oppressive individuals and [has warned us] if we do so, we will be deprived of God’s help: “And incline not toward those who do wrong lest the Fire touch you, and ye have no protecting friends against Allah, and afterward ye would not be helped.” (The Holy Quran, Sura: Hud, Verse: 113)

On the eve of the thirty-second anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, we, as two humble companions, praise you, the countless messengers of this new discourse; and we pray to the almighty God to make all of us supporters of oppressed and enemies of oppressor.

Victory comes only from God, the Mighty the Wise

Mousavi and Karroubi hold a joint meeting on Jan. 31, 2011

Scroll down for English translation…

Tagheer reported, on Monday (Jan 31, 2011) Mir Hossein Mousavi met with Mehdi Karroubi in a surprise visit. In this visit Grand Ayatollah Bayat-Zanjani, senior religious figure and critic of government, who was previously prevented by security forces from visiting with Mehdi Karroubi was also present. This meeting took place since the security forces stationed in front of Mehdi Karroubi’s residence were absent on Monday.

In this meeting Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi objected to the numerous executions and rushing into conducting executions without completing the legal process in the country; and considered it the result of the government’s recklessness and plans to create terror and fear in the society. They added: “Regardless of the people’s charges and the validity of those charges, it is the legal and legitimate right of every human to be granted all his or her rights in a complete legal process.”

Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi continued: “Does the execution of almost 300 people in the last year have any outcome for the public opinion other than creating fear and terror in the society, and making Iran even more isolated in the international scene? Is execution without completing the legal process and without the knowledge of the family of the accused, a humane and Islamic action? What is up with not releasing the bodies [of those who were executed] to the families, that has become a tradition?! Therefore, we, as citizens of this country and members of the noble nation of Iran, demand a stop to this process and we hope that the country’s judiciary can independently and by extending the full legal and legitimate rights to those accused and considering the Islamic kindness and mercy, comes up with a solution so that we do not witness such unjust process in the country.”

In another part of their remarks, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi stated: “Today, even in Arabic countries, we witness political and democratic growth. No power can suppress people’s will and demand. Sooner or later, autocratic and tyrant powers are sentenced to vanish. Today, nations are aware and one after the other take control of their fate and this is the will of the nations that has shaken tyrants. Even though, in Egypt we witness that instead of accepting the will and demand of his nation, for many years Hosni Mubarak has tried to suppress the people by having engineered elections and establishing preset parliaments and using thugs and goons; but he did not succeed, just as today he cannot take control of the situation by suppression and treats either. Of course, the action of Egypt’s army in announcing its neutrality and considering people’s demand legitimate must be thanked and praised; and it appears that the army, unlike the tyrant and autocratic government of Egypt, has heard the voice of the people’s revolution correctly.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi continued: “We hope that the voice of the freedom-seeking revolution of the people in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen reaches the ears of the tyrant and autocratic rulers in the region and in the world so that they learn lessons and revisit and review their actions and behaviors. Today in Egypt, despite tensions and clashes; the protesters are given permission to demonstrate so that it becomes clear which side has the public support, therefore, we also believe that in Iran, the protestors to the [rigged presidential] election must be given the right to demonstrate so that it becomes clear which movement has social and public support.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi in their meeting also pointed to the catastrophic economic situation of the country and expressed deep concerns regarding the hardships that the unprivileged and low-income layers of the society are suffering and added: “These days the simplest economic activities such as transferring money for business sectors has become a nightmare. Most of the international banks do not consider Iran for any kind of business activates and the government instead of reforming the situation has turned to censorship, diverting public mind and [secret] arrangements. According to credible reports currently the production costs have raised up to 40% due to international sanctions, which as a result has led many small and medium size business sectors to closure. According to chairman of Workers Unions more than 600 productions unites have been shutdown and thousands of workers lost their jobs. We believe that these hardships imposed on the people of the country are the outcome of the incompetence of the government officials and their adventurous and alarmist policies in international affairs.  This is while in addition to the warnings of the economists inside the country, the international economists also warned that the economy of the country is in crisis and very bad shape.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi at the end of their meeting expressed hope that with God’s will and with the consciousness of the great nation of Iran, Iran can proudly and victoriously put these curtail and hard times behind as well.

Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme: “Lies and slanders showed the kind of Islam they practice”

On the anniversary of the government-organized rally (December 2009) against the Green Movement the totalitarian government began attacking the leaders of the Green movement more aggressively and with a much harsher tone than used in the past. In recent weeks there has been an influx of notes, interviews, speeches and remarks against the supporters of the Green movement and Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Seyyed Mohammad Khatami.  This trend continued with the IRIB (Islamic Republic of Iran’s Broadcasting) broadcasting chants of “Death to Khatami, Death to Mousavi and Death to Karroubi” on a variety of state run news programs. Pro-government officials even went as far as portraying themselves as God, Prophet Mohammad and his family stating that Mir Hossein Mousavi, the Prime Minister during the eight year war with Iraq does not believe in God, Judgment Day and Islam! Despite the heinous attacks and insults, to date Mir Hossein Mousavi has remained silence leading to many supporters of the Green movement asking why Mousavi has not responded to all the slander and insults.  In a brief interview Kalame asked Mousavi a number of questions addressing this issue.

In response to Kalame’s questions, Mousavi referred to the methods used by the totalitarian government as out of touch and from the past and said: “They use the same methods used in totalitarian regimes such as the Soviet Union during Stalin era, or Romania during Ceauşescu’s time.” While emphasizing on the ineffectiveness of these types of negative propaganda and attacks Mousavi stated: “These ten days have provided our nation with the opportunity to better understand the nature of these guys.  All these lies and slanders showed the kind of Islam these fellows practice.”

In this latest interview Mir Hossein Mousavi once again referenced the content of the Green Charter (Mousavi’s statement #17) in which he addressed the totalitarian government as follows: ” Ignore individuals like myself but take it upon yourself to free all political prisoners and announce that you adhere to all principles included in the Constitution; allow the media to operate freely, hold free and non-selective elections and you will see the horizon will become bright, for suppression will only further increase the level of  demands.”

The full transcript of Mir Hossein Mousavi’s interview with kaleme is as follows:

Q: In recent weeks, totalitarians have launched unprecedented propaganda against you and the Green Movement, but you were silent in face of these attacks and did not take any position. What is the reason behind this silence? The expectations of many companions of Green Movement were for you to respond to these attacks.

A: I was going to respond but after the letter of my dear brother – Mr.Karroubi – was published, I decided not to. His view sheds light on the reasons behind all these irritabilities. The other reason for my silence was the fact that these kinds of propaganda belong to the past. They use the same methods used in totalitarian regimes such as the Soviet Union during Stalin era, or Romania during Ceauşescu’s time. Those, who organized these propaganda attacks, neither know our society nor have any understanding of the transformed international arena. They still live in the time before the development of communication technology.

Q: What is your assessment of the ten days of attacks launched against you and other figures of the Green Movement? How effective you think the propaganda of the totalitarians was?

A: For the same reasons I explained in the answer to the previous question these propaganda attacks not only were ineffective but due to their unfair content had reverse effect. These ten days have provided our nation with the opportunity to better understand the nature of these guys.  All these lies and slanders showed the kind of Islam these fellows practice. It is not surprising we all know a Friday Prayer Imam (Ahmad Janati – the appointed hardliner chairman of the Guardian Council) that claimed the United States gave us one billion dollars in aid through Saudi Arabia and had given us the promise of fifty billions more after the victory [in toppling the government], and still this guy, despite this lie and false accusation, is holding his official post. Therefore these immoral propaganda attacks, which have been accompanied by swearing and threats, more than harming the growing Green Movement, prove the rightfulness and vitality of the Green Movement.

They cannot understand how people react to these kinds of claims when the person, who has killed a respected man over a bird, claims that a noble man like Mr. Khatami does not understand the Quran; or [when] in their websites call the former revolutionary prosecutor, who was trusted by Imam [Khomeini], a spy of Russia; or based on ridiculous accusations, call Ms. Rahnavard – a combatant Quran researcher – ally of the rejected Pahlavi family; or call me and him (Mehdi Karroubi) Freemasons quoting a deceased writer – who fled from people’s rage and escaped to Europe and died there! They have made Goebbels proud by misleading and lying, and have established falsely accusing others and lying part of their retrogressive and mixed with superstitions faith. However, there is another delicate point which results their cook up becomes so salty and that is the deep belief of part of the government in recognizing millions of people of this country as “dirt and dust” and “sheep and cow”. One of the reasons that make them bold enough to tell such big lies, is this view they have toward the nation.

They still do not believe in people’s intelligence and unfortunately in their private they are terrified even from imagining citizens’ rights for all the people and innate dignity for all human.

Q: In Tehran’s Mahdiyeh [convention center] (where a pro-government gathering was held) and in some other platforms, they called you, Mr.Karroubi and other figures of the Green Movement as “nobody”; what are your views about such remarks?

A: Actually this statement is completely true.  Neither Mr. Karroubi nor I have ever said that we are “somebody”. It is written, in the memoirs of Sheikh Abu Saeed Abolkheir (a renown scholar and philosopher who lived many years ago) that a scholar who was competing with Sheikh sent him a messenger with this message that “I am like an elephant and you are like a mosquito” and Sheikh replied “Tell him, I am nobody and that mosquito is also you”. Of course we are not in the same level as Sheikh but based on his teaching, we also say that we are “nobody”. But this cannot be a justification for you (addressing the government) to violate people’s rights and disgrace the national covenant to this point.

Q: You reiterated a similar subject in your statement #17 (the Green Charter) which was issued in the aftermath of [the Bloody] Aashura events (December 2009). Do you still emphasize on the same demands?

A: Yes. In statement #17, I wrote: Ignore individuals like myself but take it upon yourself to free all political prisoners and announce that you adhere to all principles included in the Constitution; allow the media to operate freely, hold free and non-selective elections and you will see the horizon will become bright, for suppression will only further increase the level of  demands. These kinds of deceitful and incompetent propaganda, which are being done simultaneously with the continuation of suppression and arrests, will have no outcome but making people discouraged from reforms within the constitution.

Q: The chairman of the Coalition Party (conservative) claimed that after the [tenth presidential] election, in a meeting with a delegation, you agreed with recounting some of the votes and later in the meetings that you had with members of the Participation Front (reformist) and the Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution (reformist) they convinced you to call off this previous agreement. Is this true?

A: Unfortunately the new chairman of the Coalition Party is not experienced enough. I deny this claim. In that meeting, the last remark I made was to accept “arbitration” (in which it was supposed to have representatives of all the presidential candidates as well as fair representatives of the judiciary and the Guardian Council meet and study the complaints to come up with a joint agreement). If they review their memories, they will remember that I even brought up some names as examples for the fact finding committee. The worst part of his claim is the false accusation he has made against two recognized political parties of the country, while their main members are imprisoned.

However, in addition to him (the chairman of the Coalition Party), one of the ministers of Iran-Iraq war era (when Mir Hossein Mousavi was the Prime Minister), by referencing a western magazine, has repeatedly kept quoting a statement [claimed] to be mine. Because of his services to the country when he was the minister of health, I have waited untill now and have not said anything. I wonder when he claims to be a Muslim and despite all the documents, evidence, my speeches and statements, and even the discussion that I once had with him, how he can reference an American magazine and even go beyond that and judge my political background even in contradiction with his own previous views and statements; unless we think that he was pretending before!

Q: Considering that pressure and propaganda against the Green Movement have been increased in the recent months, how do you assess the status of the society and the Green Movement in these conditions?

A: Yes, the number of distortions, lies and threats has increased. Mass executions as well as odd and cruel sentences are also being used to intimidate. The spread of the culture of obtaining forced confessions and repentant-making, which has been transferred from the inside prisons to outside political atmosphere, is more important. Based on this culture, if you want to keep your position, or get elected, or have a share in big or small transactions, or live safe from the words and actions of hardliners, you must have enough wisdom and understanding to condemn the opposition and protestors in the Green Movement. They did not even pass on the seminary schools and the Grand Ayatollahs; and we are witnessing pressure, slanders and insults against the clerics and Grand Ayatollahs. They are unaware that even in the families of the authorities, the attention toward the demands raised by the Green Movement is increasing, since these demands are according to people’s rights and our national covenant.

Our people don’t have happy memories from forced confessions, repenter-making, hypocrisy, lies and slanders. These tricks became their own counters in the month of December. All these measures and actions show clearly that the Green Movement is progressing; and God willing and with the participation of all [companions], this trend will continue until all the demands outlined in the Green Movement are achieved. We believe: “The bubbles move aside and disappear but what is beneficial for the people remains.”

Q: Although, this mass of slanders, libel, lies and deceptions will eventually unveil, but in any case one cannot ignore the massive government’s media propaganda that is funded with astronomical budgets. In your opinion, how can one overcome these kinds of divisive projects in the society and among families? How can the Green Movement be effective in order to compensate and decrease the various gaps that might grow day by day due to the incompetence and bad intensions of the totalitarians and save the national unity in face of the government divisive agenda?

A: In my opinion, promoting awareness should remain the main strategy and the same “Every citizen [is] a media” should be the main tactic. Today, simple tasks such as distributing newspapers, letters, statements as well as distributing photos and videos of post-election events and etc. has penetrated deep [in society] and has reached even the furthest corners [of the country]. The massive army of promoting awareness and spreading information has found the most effective methods to deliver the message of truth by its creativity and with simple equipments that the information age has given it.

But in addition to the efforts in promoting awareness and fighting with the spread of lies and falsification of the truth, we must not forget the memories of the friendly discussions of the [presidential] campaign days.  We must not forget how – before the so-called security interventions turned the civil dialogue atmosphere to unrest and silenced the voice of discussion and dialogue – we were practicing and experiencing listening to each other’s voices in the campaign discussions.

We must not forget the Green Chain that was uniting all of us – [despite] the differences and varieties – from the south to the north of the cities and the country, and was teaching us how to live together. These precious memories can also be valuable lessons and models for our today. Also today, by keeping the atmosphere of national dialogue and discussion alive as much as possible, we must practice tolerating and enduring each other, and listen to each other’s views and opinions so that we can overcome the gaps created by the official media. For us being Green does not mean that we want to turn everyone into our color and into a single color, the same way the totalitarians and authoritarians prescribe their own color and view for everyone. Green is living side by side each other while understanding the differences, varieties in views, opinions and tastes. If the totalitarians and their propaganda try to highlight the gaps created in families and society, by accepting these differences, we must try to propose a prescription for peaceful living side by side each other. Promoting awareness peacefully is the most effective weapon against violence and the spread of division and ignorance seeds.

Mousavi and Karroubi hold a joint meeting ” We are standing firm on the path we have chosen”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi in a joint meeting after discussing the important affairs of the country and people’s problems, expressed concern over the implementation of government’s cut on subsidies on basic life necessities in current weak economy and demanded the implementation of this plan based on “experts’ research” and without any “hype.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi held a joint meeting. At the beginning of this meeting which was held in Mehdi Karroubi’s residence, Karroubi and Mousavi while expressing sadness and sorrow regarding the terrorist attacks which occurred last week on Tashooa (Shia religious festival) in the city of Chabahar and resulted in martyrdom of few worshipers and injuring many others, offered their deepest condolences for the families of the victims. Mousavi and Karroubi strongly condemned this terrorist attack and stressed: “The enemies of our nation must not assume that the unity and solidarity of Muslims is jeopardized by these kinds of terrorist attacks.”

Also in this meeting Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi agreed that general plan for regulating government subsides is a plan that has been discussed internationally as a “fundamental and main economic move” but demanded that its implementation be based on “experts’ research” and without any “hype”.

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi expressed deep concern regarding the implementation of the plan to cut subsidies on fuel and basic life necessities given the current weak economy and added: “The implementation of this plan while the country is facing harsh international sanctions, the economy is in recession, unemployment is more than 30% and has spread across the country in most of the provinces, and the inflation is out of control, is a burden that its pressure will be felt by lower income and middle class  layers of the society.”

Both parties emphasized: “On one hand the shutdown of factories, their inability to pay the salaries of their workers and the unemployment of workers and on the other hand losing investments due to lack of investment security in the country as well as lack of healthy competition in economy and privatization all forecast a dark future in country’s economy. This situation worsens when there is no will in the government to listen to the opinion of outstanding experts and critics. There must be an environment in the country that economy experts would be able to express their views without hesitation, instead of being confronted.”

In this meeting Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi once again expressed deep sorrow and concern regarding the dire condition of political prisoners and the made-up and unjust issued sentences against them based on the “fabricated” accusations such as “acting against national security” and added: “ The courts have issued heavy sentences against these political prisoners whom unfortunately are from the wide range of layers of society such as artist, teacher, lawyer, student, university professor, cleric, journalist and etc.; and on the other hand there have been inhuman and far from morality treatments against [political prisoners] in prisons, which leaves these political prisoners no other option but to go on hunger strike in order to protest to these actions. Here we urge the political prisoners to end their hunger strike in order to save their lives and assure them that the final victory belongs to them and to the people.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi also by reviewing the foreign policy situation of the country in the international arena expressed surprise regarding the non-diplomatic actions of the administration and added: “The foreign policy has become so ridiculous that the appointed foreign minister should hear his dismissal from the president of Senegal [during a diplomatic trip]! These kinds of actions have no outcome but humiliating the country’s reputation in international arena and demonstrate the childish behaviors based on retaliation. These actions have no result but discrediting the country in eyes of international community even more than before. Unfortunately after this humiliating event now both sides of the story are accusing each other of lying, while lying is the key of all sins!”

At the end of this meeting both parties called the “bullying” and “intimidating” remarks and actions of some individuals affiliated with the totalitarian circle, “far from rational” and emphasized: “To this day we are standing firm on the path we have chosen and also in the future we will not retrieve from this path which is nothing but to defend the rightful demands of the people; and we have no fear from threats, insults and false accusations. For us there is no difference between this big prison that holds us to the smaller prison that unjustly holds the other political prisoners. We are hopeful that one day the true “conspirators” would be held accountable for their actions in front of the nation.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s interview with Internet newspaper Qalamsabz

The full English translation of the transcript of Mir Hossein Mousavi’s interview with an underground internet newspaper – Ghalam Sabz, which is run by a group of reformist activists in absence of conventional free media – is as follows:

Qalam Sabz: With special thanks given that despite all the limitations and problems you agreed to have this interview, recently one of Tehran’s [appointed] Friday Prayer Imams(Guardian Council head Ayatollah Jannati) has resembled the [Green] Movement to “ash beneath the fire”, on the other hand a group of political activists by emphasizing on the end of street protests insist that the Green Movement has gone on recession and ended, what is your evaluation of the current situation of the movement?

Mir Hossein Mousavi: In my opinion the mentioned Friday Prayer Imam has a very strong sense of prediction. Although because of his dependence on power and rank his position is to defend oppression and violence and actions such as falsely accusing opposition of getting one billion dollars financial aid from United States, or promoting violence, or his strong desire for executions and obtaining confessions and most important than all the extensive fraud in elections and the widespread disqualifications of the candidates has made him unjust , but given all these the Greens should listen to his remarks patiently. He is a rather complete example of the tyrannical totalitarians and unconsciously reveals the good information that he has in his speeches. He resembled the movement to the ash beneath the fire and I am completely in agreement with his opinion and I add that the continuation of suppression, ignoring the truth beside the rule of lies, escaping from the law, corruption and lack of competence in domestic and foreign policies will intensify this fire that he called is beneath the ash.

Qalam Sabz: You have always stressed that network organizations are the secret of the survival and last of the Green Movement and are its valuable resources. After more than one year since the start of the activities of these organizations at this time some argue that this assumption should be reconsidered and a classic organization with a united leadership should be created, what is your opinion?

Mir Hossein Mousavi: The idea behind the social networks was created during the election campaigns and in the aftermath of the election given that the security, media and financial resources were solely in hands of the government, maybe the only way to defend people’s rights were these very same social organizations. Although the concerns over having an organization which would be suited for people’s great movement have always been there, but until now the atmosphere of repression did not allow such an affair have a possibility to happen. The establishment despite what has been stated in the constitution and what is the trend in successful countries has always showed its rage toward any organization and recently by feeling the danger of losing their base is rapidly attempting to convert the Basij to an extensive armed party; although this very same action considering the background of Basij in the long run will be harmful for tyranny. You just have a look at the prisons; the prominent leaders of well-known [reformist] parties of the country from Participation Front, Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution, National Trust, Executives for Prosperity and Freedom Movement are all imprisoned. However I agree with [the creation] of a new organization with conditions that it would have a coalition front framework and from the very beginning considers itself as a companion of Green Movement and other deep movements such as labor, women, student and teacher movements and does not go after destroying or weakening the other existing parties and movements.

Qalam Sabz: In some of the analyses it was pointed that you and the other activists of the movement have taken the forces against the movement for granted and by arrogance and without a realistic assessment of abilities and resources of the other camp did not agree to talk with them, on the other hand some accuse you of conceding. How do you see these analyses? Have you or other influential figures such as Mr. Karroubi or Mr. Khatami has been invited for talks [with the ruling government authorities]?

Mir Hossein Mousavi: In answer to this question is will quickly point out that after the election it took me two months to realize that those wicked [televised presidential campaign] debates were not for eliminating me or Mr. Karroubi but were for taking full revenge on all competitive forces and aimed for making the country a one-party system. I was only one of these targets and obstacles on their path. These fellows in that famous audio tape (by a high ranking military official) and recently quoted from a cleric are discussing the topic of a twenty-year old conspiracy, given the hidden lie in this claim I say that it was the ruling powers that have been planning and trying to make the country one-party system on the eve of the election and apparently these election was the last scene of these efforts. Considering this view the debates gain another meaning and also the vetting [of the members of parliament] that started from [elections of] the fourth term of parliament and extended to the following elections can be understood better. The totalitarians were after clearing the environment from any criticism and opposition, [they were after creating] an environment similar to North Korea with a bit of democracy cosmetics. Given all these negotiating with them had no meaning, not with me and not as much as I know with other allies.

Qalam Sabz: What is your view regarding the publication of WikiLeaks documents? In your opinion what are the outcomes and affects of the publication of these documents for Iran?

Mir Hossein Mousavi: The WikiLeaks documents have revealed important subjects regarding the international affairs. The point that is important and should be considered is that what documents could have been published and have not been published. Some of these documents very well reveal our fragile situation in the area, a situation that they (government officials) have worsened with their adventurous policies. Instead of travelling to New York for seven times, if they had invested in neighboring countries they would have seen more results. Spreading fear, making uncalculated remarks, lack of a suitable agenda, immense incompetence in diplomacy and the excessive military maneuvers have caused that while with illusions they are trying to convince the Vatican and heads of the United States and Europe about “world management” they neglected having constructive relations with countries of the area. With these policies practically we don’t have even one true ally among the neighboring countries. You just go back to the story of aiding the victims of flood in Pakistan, and compare that to the generous aids of these fellows to South America and other countries, and you will see that the very same chaos that exists in the economical and cultural policies also exists in foreign policy. Among the [WikiLeaks] documents the documents regarding Israel’s intensifying the ethnic groups’ differences should be a warning for all of our nation including ethnic groups, and I am sure that Israel is not the only country benefiting from this policy but in the world and in the area there are many countries that have the same view and are in the same line with Israel. This document and the recent terrors of our nuclear scientists show how much our support for Palestinian and Lebanese nations besides its moral aspects, is in favor of our national interests. The documents regarding the election frauds were also interesting, especially where it was pointed that the votes were not counted at all – i.e. the coup d’état election. If you refer to the interview by our dear brother Mohtashamipour (head of Mousavi’s committee to guard the votes during election) that was done few days after the election, you will realize that when he points to the issue of website of the election [headquarter] in Interior Ministry on the night of June 13,2009 (a day after election) he quickly points to the same issue. Although today our information about the story of gathering votes and  the role of the computer system is much more than yesterday but still there is room for more efforts so that all aspects of this matter would be cleared. Of course the discussions about the WikiLeaks documents needs more time but in short one can consider it as a great event of the century and outcome of progress in commutations and cyber space technology. I think with the experience that the Green social networks have gained they can understand the meaning of this recent event better that the other movements.

Qalam Sabz: What are you suggestions for the Green Movement activists and especially Ghalam Sabz newspaper?

Mir Hossein Mousavi: I pray to God for the success of all of you I hope that Ghalam [Sabz] never forgets that the movement will prevail when there would be countless pens and we all honor freedom, human dignity and respecting each other’s views.

Mousavi’s message for the month of Moharram

Full English translation of Mir Hossein Mousavi’s message for the arrival of the month of Muharram is as follows:

In the name of God

“Those who say: Our God is Allah, and afterward is upright; the angels descend upon them, saying: Fear not nor grieve, but hear good tidings of the paradise which you are promised.” (Holy Quran: Chapter Fussilat, Versus 30)

Once again we are in the month of Muharram and approaching the anniversary of the commemoration of a movement that was initiated centuries ago to return human to their innate high stature and the brightest symbol of humanity of the time and all times that chose to call out for justice and reveal fallacy over shameful silence despite all the pains that were lurking for him. [Imam] Hossein stood up at a time that he found what was left from the movement of his grandfather (prophet Mohammad) was attacked by the totalitarian storm of the power seekers and saw the religion being slaughtered for the magisterial of the palace of oppression and narcissism. Hossein was witnessing that they (the government) were wearing a clothes of justice over the fallacy and were portraying the justice as fallacy. Hossein was seeing that this time the intention of the power seekers was not only to gain control over all the power but rather to keep it at any cost and by relying on money, force and deception. He saw that this time it is the religion itself that is the target of the narcissists and it is not silence anymore that could help keep the little light of belief alive and it is the time for standing in front of all those, who in the name of being the successor to the prophet and the ruler of Muslims, were destroying the religion and religiousness to stay in power just a little bit longer.

Hossein knew that the mortar between the stones of the palace of power was lie and it is the call of truth seeking that would abolish it. Hossein knew that what great sufferings were waiting for him in that path: hired clerics would accuse him of abandoning the religion and creating sedation; would surrender the family of the prophet in difficulties and repetitive disgraces; and would put him at the cross road of choosing between a shameful life [of being silence to live] and standing for justice [and die for it]. And he chose to stand. Hossein broke silence to protect the religion of his grandfather from annihilation and accepted the leadership of a movement that was not for fame and power but for fixing wrong doings and cleaning abominations. This is why the noble men and women, who followed him, from any religion and sect, considered him the everlasting symbol of freedom seeking.

Centuries later, the Islamic revolution happened in a land with deep-rooted culture and civilization, and people who had previously proven their leadership in recognizing their best interests in a transformed world and in this part of the world  by the constitutional revolution, the movement of nationalizing oil and the movement of Khordad 15  and the creation of dialogue on freedom seeking, justice and search for independence [from the foreign influence] to progress and achieve a society in which human can reach financial peace and pious blessing. We all remember how the roaring flood of the protestors on Tasua (the day before Aashura) and Aashura of 1357 (1357 of Persian calendar: the year 1978) ended a tyrant regime (Shah’s government) that had shut down all peaceful means of criticism and objection and in the last years of its life had hallucinations that more than anything were the results of being disconnected from the realities of the society.

The tyrant rulers were surrounded by their limited toadeaters and flatterers such that instead of hearing the sound of their legitimacy cracking they were looking for hearing the voice of support from paranormal powers in their hallucinations, obliterate to the fact that the greatest asset of any country is the support of its people from the officials by free and informed participation; obliterate to the fact that legitimacy must be sought in daily improvement of people’s living condition; obliterate to the fact that the majesty must be sought in the hearts of people not in the armed parades and show of weapon stockpiles. And this is why the people of this land turned back on the rulers and the greatest revolution of the century was formed.

The millions of people, who took on the streets on days of Tasua and Aashura (of 1978), found their over hundred year old demands in the call of the man whose perseverance in undertaking the path they had tested. In the rallies of those days, everyone was participating with their ideas, beliefs and color. Those unfamiliar yesterday would become familiar faces that day; selfishness would turn into selflessness and “I”s to “We”. Since the next day of victory, those people were enthusiastic to build and reconstruct the wreckage in front of their eyes and put hands in each others’ hands with kindness. Even when disagreements escalated, they were united in front of the invading enemy (Saddam) and defended their inherited land. And who has forgotten that all across Iran was the scene for heroism: the frontlines and behind the frontlines, factories and farms, schools and universities, homes and offices, all and all were the scene for struggle and work to defend this land. And who has forgotten that when we had to accept the peace deal, the same suffered but resilient people, stood in front of those few who had sought shelter and help from the invaders, and showed that the decision to withdraw from the war was not based on fear and lack of belief but rather was based on wisdom and foresight. They showed that they consider the mistakes of their leaders forgivable because of believing in their sincerity and confession to mistake not only would not lessen the stature of their leaders but rather increase their affection in the hearts of the people. They showed that they have adopted a religion to guide their actions that has logic for its war and peace. They showed that for them, religious beliefs are guidance for them that would bring them to their destination in the mist of sand storm of the time. That was why whenever they would see themselves furthering from the path, they would attempt to fix it: Khordad 2nd (first term Mohammad Khatami was elected to president and the birth of reform movement) and Khordad 22nd (day of the rigged presidential elections in 2009) were from this vigilance.

But what a pity that the totalitarians that consider monopoly in power as their only way of surviving this time didn’t care about these just demands [of the people] at all. The totalitarians lined up all their facilities and media in front of the will of the majority, and shot their deadliest ammunition of allegation and false accusations toward the people who wanted change; and when, because of the unprecedented presence of the people, their routine cheats and tricks did not work in the process of election, they found the solution in an election coup d’état: they put aside counting the votes and announced their victory; attacked the oppositions’ campaign centers and arrested activists. And when angry and humiliated people took on the streets to peacefully and quietly demand their indisputable rights and respect for their votes, they (the totalitarians) declared shedding their bloods (blood of the people) not a sin and created the bloody events like the [Tehran] University dormitory and Kahrizak [prison] and similar to those. (Note: The government’s thugs and plain clothes militia along with the police forces twice attacked the dormitory of Tehran University and beat and killed students by throwing them off the rooftops and shooting at them. At Kahrizak prison that many Green protestors arrested and held at this prison, were killed under government’s torture, three of whom the government confessed to their murder.)

You remember what they did to the protesting mourners during last year’s Aashura: They (the government’s thugs and police forces) threw the protestors off the bridges, run over their defenseless bodies by cars, and shot at their love-filled hearts. And then shamelessly called the reaction of angry people by showing incomplete and selective footage in their media as the riot of foreign-supported goons and cried Islam is in danger! Was that person whose body was run over twice by the police car an American or Israeli? Or those who were shot directly on midday Aashura while calling [Imam] Hossein’s name were of the army of Yazid (the tyrant who was ruling Muslims and ordered the killing of Imam Hossein) or Amreas or Ebn-Ziad (deceitful agents of the tyrant rulers of the time)? After that also they arrested several men and women of the best sons and daughters of this revolution and land so that they would silence these voices. Little they know they suppressed anger of informed and oppressed people is more dangerous that their voice seeking justice.

My Green minded companions: These days the religion and its practice are going through difficult times and these days many of you ask, given all these deceptions, how one can save the pure hearts of this land’s youths from the constant waves of rejecting the religion? The answer of this humble companion of yours is that rejecting the religion finds ground to extend when the religion that is being advertized violates the very basic foundations of moral principles such as honesty and not lying; [and when] in the name of the religion, horrific crimes are committed, and in order to defeat the oppositions false accusations and lies against them are preached from the holy platforms of the Friday Prayers as not only allowed but desirable; [and when the government] mobilizes all platforms and mosques to spread false accusations and lies against the opposition by issuing memos and at the very same places the rights of the teachers and workers be ignored; and [when] the social gap, corruption and prostitution caused by the unprecedented poverty, the [high] divorce rate and unemployment be considered as normal phenomena. In such situation, how can youths identify that all these oppressions, violence and hatreds that are being assertively presented as Islam by those having the official platforms, have nothing to do with Islam? And while they have been the innocent witnesses of the massive financial and cultural problems as well as the extensive presence of lies in all affairs, how can they believe that preserving the establishment is based on preserving the moral and Islamic values and the national interests and not based on preserving the individuals at power by any means? Now instead of facing the true face of the religion which is a kind and merciful one, they are facing an ugly face which knows no other language but violence and force. They witness how the rights of the people which have been stated in the constitution are being ignored, and separation of the branches [of the government] which is a barrier against creation of the above-the-law and unlimited powers is being violated repeatedly, and the independence of the judiciary, judges and courts is destroyed by the security authorities, and the parliament that is supposed to be on top of all affairs is influenced by orders; and reckless adventures in the foreign policy are becoming norm, and military officials end up in greed and gaining money instead of fulfilling their duties; and absolutely no opposition voice is being tolerated, and the prisons are filled with women and men that do not put up with these views of the rulers.

In these critical times, let us take action as Zeynab (sister of Imam Hossein who after the martyrdom of his brother and while was taken as a prisoner of war did not keep silence and unveiled the facts) did and give the true message of religion with its spiritual face to those who are thirsty for truth. It is our responsibility to learn and teach others that the false claims of those pretending to be religious should not be considered as what the religion truly is; it is our responsibility to tell the true story of the revolution for the generation that whatever knows is either via distorting media or via those narrative it while have been against it; and in this telling the facts we should not be afraid from fairly criticizing the past and at the same time we should avoid denying its great achievements. It is our responsibility to tell the truth like Zeynab and erode the mortar that holds the palace of lies together. It is our everlasting responsibility to keep alive the memory of high statured martyrs of the revolution, the war, and the events of after the election and the noble women and men in the prisons, just like all the family of Imam Hossein. And it is our responsibility to help protect the traditional social centers by organizing and attending the ceremonies for commemorating the epic of Aashura in this memorable month.

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s statement for the National Student Day

In the name of God, The Compassionate and the Merciful

Students, companions of the Green Movement:

Young, loving and brave friends:

Greetings;

On the eve of the month of Azar [1] – The Month of Student – to commemorate your perseverance and your struggles for defending the rights of the nation of Iran and the rights of the people to have sovereignty over their own destiny, I saw necessary to write few words to you dear ones, to thanks you and pay my respect to you; especially now that the possibility of direct meeting with you has become dim!

In the recent two years, in the meetings that I had with you or in the letters and notes that you sent, I have always been witness to your concerns for the future of our beloved Iran and the freedom-seeking Green Movement of the people of Iran. Of course nothing else is expected from you, as in our land and all throughout the history, the students have always been cautiously vigilant regarding the dangers that have threatened the Iranian society; and in this path – as documented in the history – they, themselves, have always boldly faced the great dangers in the path of defending the people and the nation. Isn’t it true that the anniversary of the 16 Azar [2] every year is a reminder of the bitter events that in which the vigilant and progressive students of this land who had protested against the domestic tyranny and its foreign colonial supporters were brutally butchered? On that day following the repressions and killings, the dictators and the totalitarians had thought that the voice of criticism and protest would have been silence forever; the very same mistake that all those who rely on victory based on intimidation make, and what a bad anchor the tool of repression is, for surviving few days longer in power!

Dictators are becoming lonelier every day / Dictators wake up when it is too late

Dictators don’t realize that using money, force and deception is increasing the gap between them and the people and will push them to an illusory seemingly safe corner that is designed and implemented by the opportunist trucklers and bootlickers and enemies of the people to maybe make them forget about the pain of losing people’s support.

Dictators are becoming lonelier every day and are paranoid about everything and everyone, they drive their old friends away and consider any criticism and advice as a conspiracy plotted to destroy them; and worst of all they acknowledge their own [personal] interests equal to national interests and in such a situation they have no other option but to rely on armed forces, and they look for those who obey their orders with closed eyes and ears and [those who] do not have slightest doubts and concerns in their hearts even for a moment regarding  their ideologies and actions.

Dictators are so busy running in the tight circle they have created around themselves that cannot hear the echo of the fall of their palace of tyranny and totalitarianism, and they wake up when it is already too late to return to the embrace of the people.

Dividing people in to different clans and humiliating them, are the common methods of all tyrants and Pharaohs / Giving power a holy color is the worst  aspect of oppression / Some see themselves above the law and self-sufficient of people’s votes and views / Thieves and dictators hate the law

They (dictators) don’t realize that maybe it would be possible to prevent people’s mouths, ears and eyes from talking, hearing and seeing, but thinking is a divine blessing that the gates of its den is closed on autocrats; isn’t this the secret behind having all this fear from knowledge, students and scholars, all these anxiety from the free flow of information, all these fears from free media, all these panics from even the quiet and peaceful gatherings of the critics and protestors, all these efforts to tag the allies of the people and the revolution as [agents of] foreigners, the continuous and endless trend of labeling the children of Iran as “Them”, all these fears from anything that is linked to collective wisdom and all these attempts to avoid anything that is related to planning and knowledge-based management ?! And at the end the autocrats in order to achieve victory by the rule of fear, use the same method that Pharaoh and all Pharaoh-like rulers took advantage of it: Dividing people into different clans, labeling nation as “Us and Them”, putting people against each other, humiliating people by calling them “cows”, “lambs” and “dirt and dust” in order to get them to bow to them [3] and finally giving power a holy color [saying] that “I am your most exalted lord” [4]; and this last one – as history judged – is the worst kind of oppression, meaning that it is vital to obey [us] and not ask any questions as we are higher than being questioned. Do the extensive violations of the law, the apprehension against the demands of comprehensive return to the constitution, lack of compliance with people’s vote, escaping from free, competitive and non-selective elections and shutting down the newspapers have any other meaning than the fact that some consider themselves above the law and self-sufficient from people’s votes and views?

In 1980, didn’t the late Imam [Khomeini] say “everyone must act based on the law. This is the law that the nation voted for it, they did not vote so that you can put it aside and ignore it. Go and do your jobs”? ; and in 1981 he also said: “Of course thieves hate the law and dictators hate the law as well.”; and it was him who in response to the direct letter by the members of the parliament regarding the diversion of the establishment from the boundaries of the constitution said “We all must return to the law”.

Ill economy, uneducated policies and serious corruption/ What happened to the promise of bringing oil money to people’s dining tables and the promise of confronting corrupt officials? / Condemning the Green Movement and three million informed students by magisterial note and order

1– My dear friends, today this is the case: Due to the use of wrong method of buying time by creating constant crises, great costs are exposed on our people; so that with the doomed to fail methods of escaping forward, reinforcing the sectarian relations with the model of “complete obedience or dismissal”, and invoking hatreds because of deepened gap between poor and rich, this short-term power will not last more than few days in the hands of the rulers.

The process that should have been undertaken by giving extensive assurance to the people – people who have lost their faith in the government due to the corrupt election which was full of irregularities as well as the computer manipulation of people’s vote – and by taking advantage of collective wisdom and impartial and faithful experts, now is being called painful surgery that is more than ever threatening the life of this ill economy due to uneducated policies and deep corruptions. Everywhere there is talk of exhaustive pressures on families that are struggling these days with poverty and destitution more than ever.

The military officials and the police clearly state their worries regarding the nervous reaction of the people and the danger of possible misuse [of this reaction] by foreign enemies and domestic opponents.

The great question of our people from them is that if you are truly aware of these facts and hear the unanimous opinion of the experts that executing this plan with the form that you have prepared and carried out has no outcome other than financial and human loss, and increased injustice, then why do you insist this much to ignore the opinions of renowned economists of the country and the members of the parliament? What happened to those promises of free education and creating jobs and Article 43 of the constitution [5]? Why are you not telling people what you want to do with the money that you want to take from people’s pockets by increasing prices, in the absence of the Organization for Plans and Budgets [6] and with the weakened parliament and effect-less regulatory councils and organizations? Can the abuse of need and poverty of people by redistributing part of the money that you have stolen from them, control future crises? What happened to the promise of bringing oil money to people’s dining tables and the promise of confronting corrupt officials [7]? How is it that you only quietly whisper about the fate of the official twenty-year outlook [8]? Don’t you think that even if you utilize all mosques, religious sites and traditional camps with magisterial note and order to condemn the Green Movement, three million informed and intelligent students can effectively communicate with all religious and underachieved layers of the society by spreading questions and evaluations [of the government’s policies], and explain to them the reason behind the mustiness, poverty and fall of the national production?

The tactic of escaping forward and crafting crisis/ They don’t see the demonstration of Khordad 25 (June 15, 2009) and seek refuge in the [government] engineered gatherings / There is no sign of wisdom to return to the people

2– Maybe the plan is to make the water muddy once again with this excuse and once again instead of being responsible, they follow the tactic of escaping forward and ruining opportunities to the point of the annihilation of the establishment and creation of serious crises in the country. Today we are witnessing the cry of “Enemy! Enemy!” of the officials as part of the strategy for victory using fear mongering. Previously we witnessed – with the proof of recorded images – that security forces and the individuals known as “plain clothes”, set cars and motorcycles on fire, broke windows and damaged buildings, and shamelessly accused the protestors [of committing these crimes]. Is it difficult for those who easily stage street shows and the government’s agents who wear wigs and put on makeup and wear the women dresses [9], to fabricate crisis once again under the name of Green or Red sedition or any other name; and use it to deceive public and mislead regulatory institutions, and to use it for more political revenge?

Unfortunately, the [tragic] experiences of Kahrizak [prison] and the University [of Tehran] dormitory [attacks], running over innocent people with police car, throwing people off the bridge [10], dunking prisoners’ heads in toilet bowls and not hearing the roar of people in the demonstrations of Khordad 25th, 28th and 30th (15, 18 and 20 of June 2009) as well as the other days and instead seeking refuge in the [government] engineered and ordered gatherings are in front of us and yet there is no sign of wisdom to return to the people!

Comprehensive execution of the constitution, avoiding violence and abiding to morality is the main principle of the Green Movement/ People on the streets should not pay the price of the government’s incompetence/ Don’t make the face of life uglier for the people

3– Companions of the Green Movement still consider the demand for comprehensive execution of the constitution, avoiding violence and abiding to morality and ethical means as their main principle; and oppose anyone who, with whatever reason or excuse, wants to create blind chaos, and see this in contrast with the welfare and national interest of Iranians and the goals of the Green Movement. We should also advise others that think logically and ask them to stop a move if it seems detrimental to them.

People on the streets should not pay the price of the government’s incompetence and salt should not be put on their deep wounds. It should be quite the opposite, as this humble companion has always requested, those who, these days, are falling beneath the mountain of problems should be helped so that they can continue their decent living without being forced to take measures that tarnish their human dignity. The face of life has become ugly for many people; don’t make it uglier but instead try to embellish it as much as you can.

How can we object inside the suffocating and oppressive environment/ Knowledge is Esfandiar’s eye for the totalitarians / We should remember that for us the goal does not justify the means/ There is no failure in this path; we are all together

4– Dear friends, you have asked what the companions of the Green Movement can do these days when because of severe suppression and security confrontations, there is no possibility of expressing objections and criticisms. The reality is that the answer to this question should also be the result of public wisdom and it is appropriate that all companions and devotees of the Green Path of Hope participate in finding the suitable solution.

In my opinion, as a member of this vast group (members of the Green movement), “Knowledge is Esfandiar’s eye for the totalitarians”[11]. Extending knowledge to those who don’t have access to the virtual world, face-to-face contacts, increasing the capacity of analyzing what is happening around us, studying and having discussions in small groups – face-to-face or online – and extending the social networks that are immune to the current security environment, becoming familiar with the history of Islam and Iran and especially the events of the movements of the people of this land from the Constitutional Movement [12] until now, can be part of our efforts and not all of them.

We can prevent the unacceptable behavior that the government officials and figures are using to maintain their power, from becoming the norm by introducing the divine Islam – in discussion and in practice – and rejecting the mentality and actions that are being spread in the name of religion and are far from the spiritual sources and the teachings of religious figures.

We should remember that for us the goal does not justify the means. We should remember how the slogan of “Lying Is Prohibited” in the glorious days before the election raised from within the spirit of people who have been tired from constant lies of the authoritarians and echoed in the space of this land. We should remember that unless each and every one of us cleanse ourselves from impurities and immoralities, expecting an ethical society – in which all human can achieve climax of their humanity – is useless; and we should remember that in this path there is no failure but immense persistence and perseverance, and not being afraid of fabricated accusations and other oppressive actions is necessary. We should not forget that we were all chanting together “Don’t be afraid! Don’t be afraid! We are all together!” [13]

We should remember political prisoners and comfort families of the victims/ Students are the greatest asset of the movement that its companions are countless

5– Remembering the imprisoned warriors – women and men – and informing the public about the resilience of the political prisoners and comforting families of the martyrs and victims is of duties of all of us. It is appropriate that in this month of Azar [1], “The Month of Student”, we remember the imprisoned students; students, who did not forget the three heavenly martyrs of Azar 16th [14] and showed that in the path of achieving a just and free society that belongs to all of Iranians, they fear no danger and do resist bravely.

And finally, who doesn’t know that the greatest asset of the Green Movement is the three millions informed students of the country? The movement whose companions are countless and each of them in a way is the leader of this immense movement of the people.

Karroubi and Mousavi meet: “Economic policies will lead to disintegration of regime”

Leaders of Iran’s opposition Green Movement Mahdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi held a meeting on Sunday at the home of the former Prime Minister despite an attempt by security forces to prevent the meeting from taking place.

On Sunday, security forces attempted to prevent Karroubi and his bodyguards from visiting fellow 2009 presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. After receiving news of the incident, Mousavi decided to take matters into his own hands and intervened by driving towards the scene and picking up Karroubi and his sons by car. The two men were thus able to hold their planned meeting.

During the meeting which was reported by Saham News, Karroubi expressed dismay over “institutionalisation” of lies and slander in the country and spoke about the “engineering” of votes during the 2009 elections and the post-election crackdowns that followed. “They treated the people in the worst way, using a great deal of violence,” Karroubi said, while pointing out that no one could respond their “smears” and “lies.” “They cannot tolerate the slightest bit of response from opponents and critics, neither in the National Media nor in the press … they cannot stand any form of freedom of speech and have effectively killed the freedom to speak the truth and to be truthful … even though they could have saved the country from all dangers by holding true elections.”

Speaking about the government’s proposed plan to cut subsidies, Mousavi said that “no one [was] against [more] targeted subsidies, but our main word is that there is no one that can manage this plan and a substantial number of well-known and able experts have been pushed aside [and are in prison].” “It is not a great accomplishment [if we] deploy forces in 2000 neighbourhoods in Tehran or if the Chief of Police boasts about scaring the population with the aid of the IRGC and Basij, [in order to implement the subsidy cuts].”

“The management style of these men [the authorities] has brought so much disaster for the country’s economy and its other sectors that it is now difficult to even reach [our] position six years ago.”

The two men who have been spearheading Iran’s Green Movement ever since the rigged presidential election of 2009, also discussed the increasing pressure on academic staff, students, lawyers and journalists and the harsh sentences and bans handed down to prisoners in the past year. “Yet with all of these measure, every day, newer and motivated forces enter the stage and the growth of the people’s movement is strengthening every day.”

In a clear reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s recent remarks about the Green Movement, Karroubi and Mousavi added, “It is not in the country’s interest to create schisms among the nation and to call millions of teachers, workers, students, professors, women and men in the country, ‘dirt and dust’, ‘calves’, ‘germs’ and [perpetrators of] ‘sedition’.”

Recently and during his much publicised visit to Qom, Khamenei once more referred to the past year of protest against the election fraud that saw Ahmadinejad’s re-election, as “sedition” carried out by the regime’s “enemies.” He said, “The people’s alertness in the sedition of 2009 inoculated the country and the people against our political and social germs.”

The leaders of the Green Movement said that “creating fear and terror” among the population would result in a “loss of legitimacy” and that “no [political] system can survive without legitimacy.”

“We believe that all of the Iranian nation are dear, and have citizen rights and all of them have an inherent dignity. Human nature is at odds with [terms such as] ‘germs’ and ‘dirt and dust’. A healthy and desirable society formed based on the people’s vote, is a society in which protests, strikes, criticism, etc are among the [most] natural and basic rights of the people.”

In the end, the two reformist figures criticised the current administration’s “adventurous” policies that had led to many UN resolutions against Iran in a very short time span. They also maintained that the continuation of the difficult living conditions in the country as a result of the government’s mismanagement of the economy, would lead to the “disintegration of the system.”
