University students in Tehran disrupt speech by former Ahmadinejad minister

Scroll down for English translation…

GVF — Students at a university in Tehran have overshadowed a planned lecture by Ahmadinejad’s former Culture Minister by chanting “Death to the dictator,” according to a report.

According to opposition website Daneshjoo News, student at Tehran’s Azad University (north branch) disrupted a planned speech by Hossein Saffar-Harandi, a former Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Ahmadinejad’s cabinet.

The talk, which had been organised by the university’s Basij unit, was disrupted when a student asked Saffar-Harandi a question regarding the occurrence of fraud in Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election. The question was then followed by chants of “Death to the dictator” in protest against the official’s presence on campus.

This is not the first time that Saffar-Harandi has been jeered by student while delivering a lecture at an Iranian university. In November 2009, students at Tehran’s Khaje Nasir University of Technology showed their opposition towards the former minister by tossing shoes at him. Similar incidents have also been reported in the Universities of Qazvin and Tabriz.

Saffar-Harandi is currently an advisor on cultural affairs in Iran’s elite fighting force, the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

Internet crackdown in Iran ahead of Students Day

The internet in the dormitories of Tehran Medical and Science University is filtered and users cannot use Yahoo Messenger. Users cannot even have access to website such as Mibo with proxies. Also, the student’s accounts are disconnected once every 30 minutes making it impossible to download anything from the internet.

We have also heard that other Universities such as Elm o Sanat and Khaje Nasir University are encountering similar problems.

Azad University Board of Founders invite Mousavi to their meeting and exclude Ahmadinejad representative

The first meeting of the founders of the Azad University (country’s largest private university) after the recent widespread controversy and the efforts of Ahmadinejad’s administration to gain control over this institution by mobilizing their thugs in front of the parliament and pressuring the members of the parliament, was held.

In this meeting the founding members not only did not let the newly appointed representative of Ahmadinejad be present in the meeting but also by inviting Mir Hossein Mousavi once again expressed their firm objection to the recent legislation by Supreme Revolutionary Cultural Council (chaired by Ahmadinejad) in eliminating Mir Hossein Mosuavi’s name from the list of founding members of the University.

Of course this was not the only important event of this meeting, but also in this meeting the founding members of Azad University once again stressed on endowing the properties and belonging of the university in order to keep them safe from the hands of government and even passed the budget of the list of endowments.

Parliament Again Becomes Battleground for Ahmadinejad-Rafsanjani Split

insideIran – The Iranian parliament passed a bill June 21 in which any changes to the constitution of Azad University, a network of private universities in Iran, must be approved by the so-called “Board of Founders,” and cannot be changed by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, which is chaired by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

This bill is significant because it prevents President Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei from taking over Iran’s most profitable educational system estimated by Kayhan, a hardline newspaper close to Khamenei, to possess assets worth up to 250 billion dollars.

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani is the chairman of the Board of Founders and was the person behind the creation of private universities in Iran some 29 years ago. The current head of Azad University, Ahmad Jasbi, is considered a close ally of Rafsanjani. Jasbi is the longest serving executive in Iran for heading Azad University since its founding. Rafsanjani’s son, Mehdi Hashemi, is also a high-ranking executive of Azad University. The Iranian judiciary has issued an arrest warrant for Mehdi Hashemi, but he left Iran last summer before the warrant was issued in order to avoid prosecution.

The Supreme Council on the Cultural Revolution and President Ahmadinejad’s allies pursued a number of goals by seeking to take over Azad University. First, pro-government forces would have assumed control over a significant amount of money currently in the hands of Rafsanjani’s allies.

Second, by eliminating a major source of funding and removing Jasbi from his post, the hardliners would have moved one step closer to making Rafsanjani less relevant.

Third, Azad University operates campuses in the most remote corners of Iran, where public universities have traditionally failed to reach. Controlling this network of universities would have allowed hardliners to tighten their hold on Iran’s university campuses from where they have received stiff resistance and disobedience.

The parliamentary vote against the Supreme Council on Cultural Revolution and in favor of the Board of Founders is a victory for Rafsanjani. But this victory may not last long.

The parliament has come under enormous pressure by hardliners inside the government. In reaction to this bill, President Ahmadinejad canceled his meeting with Ali Larijani, the speaker of parliament, and Sadegh Larijani, Iran’s chief justice, Monday June 22. Supreme Leader Khamenei is also believed to be on the side of the government. Pro-government protestors have been demonstrating outside the parliament demanding the bill to be overturned.

The bill, if not overturned by the parliament in another vote, will go to the Guardian Council. The Guardians will most likely reject the bill, which will then go to the Expediency Council chaired by Rafsanjani.

Attack on Azad University offices by 20 plain-clothed militia in Iran

According to reports, yesterday at midnight a group of more than 20 plain clothes militia who were armed with weapons illegally entered the Office of Board of Trustees and Founders of Islamic Azad University and the office of the Center for Advanced Science and Technology.

According to reports these plain clothes militia used intimidation, threats, and even handcuffed the security personnel of these buildings, entered some of the offices of these buildings, vandalized them and took some documents, computers and other objects with them; still there is no accurate list of what exactly was confiscated in last night’s raid.  The illegal search and seizure lasted about 4 hours.

According to the statement by the Office of Board of Trustees and Founders of Islamic Azad University, these attacks were in continuation of the recent activities against the Islamic Azad University as well as the illegal changes made to the rules and introducing new members to the board of trustees [by Ahmadinejad administration] and also the illegal gatherings by plain clothes militia in front of various offices of the university in the past few days.

Islamic Azad University is country’s largest private chain of universities which has branches all over the country and was one of the projects initiated during Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s presidency.  Until recently Mehdi Hashemi-Rafsanjani, son of Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani, was the president of the university.  When Ahmadinejad came to power there have been some tensions between the university and the administration as the administration has tried to take control over this university.

Protests at Azad University in Iran turn violent

On the first day of Khordad (May 22nd), protests by Azad University Tehran Central students turned violent during altercations with Basiji and security forces.

A few hundred students of the Faculty of Engineering at Azad University Central gathered to protest the results of the coup elections, the continued arrests and the wide spread expulsion of students from the university.

As per Bamdad News, beginning early this morning there was a strong military atmosphere at Azad University Tehran Central and both intelligent and paramilitary forces had an extensive presence on campus. In addition, the entrance to the University and surrounding streets were heavily controlled by anti riot police who were preventing many students from entering the university. At the same time, in an effort to safeguard the premises, more than 50 known student activists were denied entry to the university grounds.

As the day progressed and classes came to an end, the crowd began to assemble, and chants including “Ya Hossein, Mir Hossein”, “Death to Dictator”, “We Support our brave students”and “All imprisoned students must be released” filled the air.

Students were attacked by Basiji and intelligence forces as they ended their protest with the famous song “Yareh Dabestanieh Man” (My Childhood School Mate) and a speech by one of their classmates.

As per reports received from the scene, it was at this time that security forces and intelligence officers from the Ministry of Intelligence inside the university premises began arresting a number of the students present.

It is worth mentioning that the afternoon classes at the Engineering Faculty at Tehran Central were canceled as a result of the conflicts and because so many students had been banned from entering the premises.

The exact number of students hurt and arrested is unclear as mobile phone access was cut off from one hour prior to the protests and at the time this report was published.

Currently, special security forces on motorcycles are circulating outside the Tehran Faculty of Engineering and it has been reported that in some cases they have attacked and beaten students.

This is not the first time that protests at the Engineering Faculty at Tehran University Azad have ended in violence, even though the head of the university Dr. Gozashti had promised to prevent such events from occurring again.

Students strongly believe that entry by plain clothes agents and interrogators from the Ministry of Intelligence would not be possible without cooperation by the head of the university. It is also their opinion that the heavy sentences, unprecedented student expulsions and the recent appointment of Dr. Eftekhari as the new head of the university is just another way to increase pressure on students and create a security filled atmosphere.

It is also worth mentioning that at the beginning of the school year the students at Azad University had already protested against the coup government. The third protest by the students at this university took place last year on Mehr 21st, 1388. It led to brutal attacks and the use of tear gas by Basiji and security forces in which many students were admitted to the hospital.

During the current academic year alone, more than 50 suspension and expulsion sentences have been issued to students at Azad University Tehran Central.
