According to Mehdi Karroubi’s close adviser, Karroubi in a message from under house arrest addressed regime and said: “Be brave and hold a public trial for us”

In a message sent to Deutsche Welle via his adviser Mojtaba Vahedi,Mehdi Karroubi referred to the recent declarations by the ruling government in the aftermath of the February 14th, 2011 [25 Bahman 1389] demonstrations as “bogus” and demanded that he be put on trial “in a court similar to the infamous trials in which Khosro Golesorkhi and Mahmoud Taleghani were put on trial during the reign of the Shah of Iran.”

Mojtaba Vahedi told Deutsche Welle: “As an adviser of Mehdi Karroubi, I wish to read a direct message to your audience from Mr. Karroubi that I received minutes ago under very difficult conditions.”  Mr. Vahedi added: “Mr. Karroubi emphasized that although his message is addressed to the public at large, first and foremost he would like to extend a deep and heartfelt apology to his neighbors whose peace and comfort was once again disturbed last night Wednesday February 16th, 2011 until 3:00am by government thugs.  These individuals proceeded to use extremely vulgar words in their slogans, words that are not even worthy of families associated with this regime. Mr. Karroubi and his family would like to extend their deepest apologies to all those who were forced to listen to the vulgarities expressed by official government agents.”

While reading Mehdi Karroubi’s message his adviser continued: “The events that occurred yesterday clearly demonstrate that a direct order was given by high ranking individuals from within the government and in accordance to this directive, individuals were required to demand the the trial of Mr. Karroubi and Mr. Mousavi.  It is very clear that after 22 months, individuals such as Rohani, Nategh Nouri, Ghalibaf and other friends such as Abtahi have been pressured into giving interviews.”

According to Karroubi’s adviser Mojtaba Vahedi, Karroubi’s message to these individuals was as follows: “Now that you have executed the mission given to you by the government, I suggest you do something humanitarian. Ask the government to put us on a public trial. At minimum have the courage to hold a trial similar to those during the Shah’s reign, trials like those held for the late Golesorkhi, Taleghani and Bokharai in which media outlets were at least allowed to report on the trials and even publish some of the details of the defense.”

Karroubi’s adviser continued:”Mr. Karroubi said if this regime has the courage to hold a public trial, we will prove whether it is we who seek to overthrow the government or individuals from within the regime itself who have such intentions. It goes without saying however that the intention to overthrow [the government] has already begun, as this government is no longer a republic nor is it Islamic.  These gentlemen overthrew the Islamic Republic long ago.The tactics by the IRIB (Iran’s International Broadcasting) demonstrated how corrupt they are and in the event that there is a trial, Mr. Karroubi does not expect for his trial to be broadcast on the national television, but hopes at minimum that newspapers and other media outlets would be allowed to cover it.”

Mehdi Karroubi’s adviser concluded: “Mr. Karroubi emphasized that a government that puts so much pressure [on its citizens], if it was courageous, if it was willing to stand by its own words and was willing to tell the truth, would hold a public trial. In the event that such trial takes place, Mr. Karroubi will prove that this government was overthrown by its own leaders and is no longer a republic, nor is it Islamic.”

Mousavi and Karroubi hold a joint meeting on Jan. 31, 2011

Scroll down for English translation…

Tagheer reported, on Monday (Jan 31, 2011) Mir Hossein Mousavi met with Mehdi Karroubi in a surprise visit. In this visit Grand Ayatollah Bayat-Zanjani, senior religious figure and critic of government, who was previously prevented by security forces from visiting with Mehdi Karroubi was also present. This meeting took place since the security forces stationed in front of Mehdi Karroubi’s residence were absent on Monday.

In this meeting Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi objected to the numerous executions and rushing into conducting executions without completing the legal process in the country; and considered it the result of the government’s recklessness and plans to create terror and fear in the society. They added: “Regardless of the people’s charges and the validity of those charges, it is the legal and legitimate right of every human to be granted all his or her rights in a complete legal process.”

Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi continued: “Does the execution of almost 300 people in the last year have any outcome for the public opinion other than creating fear and terror in the society, and making Iran even more isolated in the international scene? Is execution without completing the legal process and without the knowledge of the family of the accused, a humane and Islamic action? What is up with not releasing the bodies [of those who were executed] to the families, that has become a tradition?! Therefore, we, as citizens of this country and members of the noble nation of Iran, demand a stop to this process and we hope that the country’s judiciary can independently and by extending the full legal and legitimate rights to those accused and considering the Islamic kindness and mercy, comes up with a solution so that we do not witness such unjust process in the country.”

In another part of their remarks, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi stated: “Today, even in Arabic countries, we witness political and democratic growth. No power can suppress people’s will and demand. Sooner or later, autocratic and tyrant powers are sentenced to vanish. Today, nations are aware and one after the other take control of their fate and this is the will of the nations that has shaken tyrants. Even though, in Egypt we witness that instead of accepting the will and demand of his nation, for many years Hosni Mubarak has tried to suppress the people by having engineered elections and establishing preset parliaments and using thugs and goons; but he did not succeed, just as today he cannot take control of the situation by suppression and treats either. Of course, the action of Egypt’s army in announcing its neutrality and considering people’s demand legitimate must be thanked and praised; and it appears that the army, unlike the tyrant and autocratic government of Egypt, has heard the voice of the people’s revolution correctly.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi continued: “We hope that the voice of the freedom-seeking revolution of the people in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen reaches the ears of the tyrant and autocratic rulers in the region and in the world so that they learn lessons and revisit and review their actions and behaviors. Today in Egypt, despite tensions and clashes; the protesters are given permission to demonstrate so that it becomes clear which side has the public support, therefore, we also believe that in Iran, the protestors to the [rigged presidential] election must be given the right to demonstrate so that it becomes clear which movement has social and public support.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi in their meeting also pointed to the catastrophic economic situation of the country and expressed deep concerns regarding the hardships that the unprivileged and low-income layers of the society are suffering and added: “These days the simplest economic activities such as transferring money for business sectors has become a nightmare. Most of the international banks do not consider Iran for any kind of business activates and the government instead of reforming the situation has turned to censorship, diverting public mind and [secret] arrangements. According to credible reports currently the production costs have raised up to 40% due to international sanctions, which as a result has led many small and medium size business sectors to closure. According to chairman of Workers Unions more than 600 productions unites have been shutdown and thousands of workers lost their jobs. We believe that these hardships imposed on the people of the country are the outcome of the incompetence of the government officials and their adventurous and alarmist policies in international affairs.  This is while in addition to the warnings of the economists inside the country, the international economists also warned that the economy of the country is in crisis and very bad shape.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi at the end of their meeting expressed hope that with God’s will and with the consciousness of the great nation of Iran, Iran can proudly and victoriously put these curtail and hard times behind as well.

Karroubi in an open letter to people: I am not afraid

Mehdi Karroubi in reaction to the recent attacks and threats by totalitarians against Green leaders in an open letter to the people of Iran once again stressed that he is not intimidated by these threats and emphasized  “I am not that kind of a willow to shiver from this kind of breeze” . In part of this letter Mehdi Karroubi wrote: “ It has been months since the peak of people’s protest movement; days that although each one of them carried bitter and concerning news of arrests and imprisonments but have had useful and valuable outcome which was the unveiling of the other side of power and ruling in the Islamic establishment of Iran. This other side is the reflection of corruption and chaos influenced by power which can be seen in all government affairs.”

Mehdi Karroubi in response to the threats by hardliners to put Green leaders on so-called trial stated: “From here I announce that I am not that kind of willow that shivers with this kind of breeze, and I welcome this hearing and have strong evidence for all my positions, as it has been 21 years that we are constantly struggling with the same issue in different forms and have had no peace; and I am ready for a hearing in any form however I ask that if these guys are truthful in their claims there must be an open hearing so that all the nation, who are the real owners of this country hear both sides and decide so that it becomes clear whether we were greedy to gain the power and in order to survive a few more days made chaos or the government put aside the votes and values to gain monopoly.”

Iran’s Intelligence Minister says Opposition Leaders made detailed plans to eliminate religion in Iran

Iranian intelligence minister, Heydar Moslehi accused the opposition of making detailed plans to eliminate religion from Iran. In Qom’s Feizieh Seminary School, Moslehi referred to a “moving document” which delineates the “overthrow of religion in Iran.”

Moslehi said that the document has been examined by an expert who has identified the writers of the document. He added that the literature of this text corresponds with that of the Toudeh Party, Iran’s first communist party.

Iranian conservatives have repeatedly accused the reformist factions of sedition. They have now taken the attacks against the reformists a step further by accusing them of being against religion.

Pro-government media have referred to Alireza Beheshti, a top MirHosein Mousavi aide, as the author of this document.

Alireza Beheshti is the son of prominent cleric, Ayatollah Beheshti who was killed in the early years of the Islamic Republic in an explosion at the office of Islamic Republic Party which he had founded.

Alireza Beheshti who was also in charge of the opposition’s committee for investigating the post-election violence, was arrested twice in the post-election crackdown on protesters and released on bail.

The Minister of Intelligence stressed that the “sedition” has been twenty years in the making and maintained that a “soft war” is being waged against the Islamic Republic by “creating public discontent through highlighting shortcomings on the economy, by creating social NGO’s that follow their agenda and by using widespread psychological and media strategies to show the government is ineffective.”

Karroubi and Mousavi meet: “Economic policies will lead to disintegration of regime”

Leaders of Iran’s opposition Green Movement Mahdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi held a meeting on Sunday at the home of the former Prime Minister despite an attempt by security forces to prevent the meeting from taking place.

On Sunday, security forces attempted to prevent Karroubi and his bodyguards from visiting fellow 2009 presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. After receiving news of the incident, Mousavi decided to take matters into his own hands and intervened by driving towards the scene and picking up Karroubi and his sons by car. The two men were thus able to hold their planned meeting.

During the meeting which was reported by Saham News, Karroubi expressed dismay over “institutionalisation” of lies and slander in the country and spoke about the “engineering” of votes during the 2009 elections and the post-election crackdowns that followed. “They treated the people in the worst way, using a great deal of violence,” Karroubi said, while pointing out that no one could respond their “smears” and “lies.” “They cannot tolerate the slightest bit of response from opponents and critics, neither in the National Media nor in the press … they cannot stand any form of freedom of speech and have effectively killed the freedom to speak the truth and to be truthful … even though they could have saved the country from all dangers by holding true elections.”

Speaking about the government’s proposed plan to cut subsidies, Mousavi said that “no one [was] against [more] targeted subsidies, but our main word is that there is no one that can manage this plan and a substantial number of well-known and able experts have been pushed aside [and are in prison].” “It is not a great accomplishment [if we] deploy forces in 2000 neighbourhoods in Tehran or if the Chief of Police boasts about scaring the population with the aid of the IRGC and Basij, [in order to implement the subsidy cuts].”

“The management style of these men [the authorities] has brought so much disaster for the country’s economy and its other sectors that it is now difficult to even reach [our] position six years ago.”

The two men who have been spearheading Iran’s Green Movement ever since the rigged presidential election of 2009, also discussed the increasing pressure on academic staff, students, lawyers and journalists and the harsh sentences and bans handed down to prisoners in the past year. “Yet with all of these measure, every day, newer and motivated forces enter the stage and the growth of the people’s movement is strengthening every day.”

In a clear reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s recent remarks about the Green Movement, Karroubi and Mousavi added, “It is not in the country’s interest to create schisms among the nation and to call millions of teachers, workers, students, professors, women and men in the country, ‘dirt and dust’, ‘calves’, ‘germs’ and [perpetrators of] ‘sedition’.”

Recently and during his much publicised visit to Qom, Khamenei once more referred to the past year of protest against the election fraud that saw Ahmadinejad’s re-election, as “sedition” carried out by the regime’s “enemies.” He said, “The people’s alertness in the sedition of 2009 inoculated the country and the people against our political and social germs.”

The leaders of the Green Movement said that “creating fear and terror” among the population would result in a “loss of legitimacy” and that “no [political] system can survive without legitimacy.”

“We believe that all of the Iranian nation are dear, and have citizen rights and all of them have an inherent dignity. Human nature is at odds with [terms such as] ‘germs’ and ‘dirt and dust’. A healthy and desirable society formed based on the people’s vote, is a society in which protests, strikes, criticism, etc are among the [most] natural and basic rights of the people.”

In the end, the two reformist figures criticised the current administration’s “adventurous” policies that had led to many UN resolutions against Iran in a very short time span. They also maintained that the continuation of the difficult living conditions in the country as a result of the government’s mismanagement of the economy, would lead to the “disintegration of the system.”

Banned reformist Party calls on Rafsanjani to probe post-election government policies

Iranian reformist party, Islamic Iran Participation Front, calls on Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council to “create and establish a fact finding committee to find the roots and tell the truth about the events of the past year and half” in the country.

In the past year and a half, following the controversial re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the summer of 2009, his opponents in the presidential campaign along with millions of people across the country protested against vote fraud.

The government responded to peaceful demonstrations and demands for a recount with extreme violence on the streets against demonstrators and it has continued to arrest thousands of people including many members of the Participation Front. In addition, scores of newspapers as well as the reformist parties have been shut down and Islamic Iran Participation Front has even been dissolved by the order of the judiciary.

Norooz website reports that the Islamic Iran Participation Front has addressed the letter to the Chairman of the Expediency Council because they claim no other government body responds to their complaints.

They urge Hashemi Rafsanjani to use his “intrinsic and historic” position in the Islamic Republic to save the country by establishing an impartial committee to investigate the allegations of fraud in the elections with consideration for “contentions of both parties in the matter.”

They also call for a probe into the deaths of “about one hundred people” and injuries of “thousands of people” on the streets of the country as well as Kahrizak Prison where post-elections detainees were tortured and even killed, and also the raid on Tehran University dorm where students were beaten and abused.

The reformist party goes on to demand an investigation of the harsh treatment of detainees currently in prison and the interference of security and intelligence forces in the responsibilities of the judiciary.

The Participation Front calls on Ayatollah Rafsanjani to charge to the committee also with a probe into “the military takeover of the economy” and “the destructive economic policies of the government” and find a solution to lead the country out of its “current crisis” and “to recover the trust between the people and the government.”

Islamic Iran Participation Front endorsed MirHosein Mousavi in the 2009 presidential elections and currently many of its senior members are behind bars charged with “activities against national security and propaganda against the system.

Government raids office of Iranian reformist organization

The office of the Iranian reformist party, Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution, was raided by a number of officers in plain clothes.

Jaras website reports that the officers confiscated all computers, and documents from the office.

The report adds that two of the employees were present at the office and were locked in a room during the raid.

Last month, Iran’s prosecutor and spokesman for the judiciary announced that the two reformist parties Mohajedin of the Islamic Revolution and Islamic Iran Participation front have been officially dissolved by the judiciary.

The two organizations disputed the decision and the IIPF even published a document revealing that one of the branches of the Revolutionary court has in fact annulled the move against their organization and reinstated them.

Last week, Mohammad Salamti, secretary general of Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution announced that his organization still considers itself a legal entity and will continue all its activities within the framework of the law.

He announced that the organization has not been involved in any legal action against it and none of its representatives have been summoned to any legal proceedings.

Karroubi: In fight with lies effort of every one of us is needed

According to Tagheer website, Mehdi Karroubi while expressing concerns regarding the institutionalization of slander and lying said: “Unfortunately in the environment tainted with lying and spreading superstitions, the mental and social security will be harmed and the society will face numerous crises; especially now that people are facing serious problems in their everyday lives and in the economy, thanks to the efforts of these gentlemen (government officials) in their management of the world!”

Mehdi Karroubi met with the members of the youth faction of National-Trust party (chaired by Mehdi Karroubi). In this friendly meeting the chairman of the National Trust party addressed  the youth and said: “For sure this situation will not last and will not stay as is; and you, the youth, plan for future with hope and liveliness, because certainly the future belongs to you, the young.”

Mehdi Karroubi,  in reply to the orrow expressed by the young members of the National Trust regarding the attacks of the Basji militias and goverment organized thugs at his residence few weeks ago, said: “Don’t be sad!  for sure this situation of governing the country will not last as is. These events will pass and  pride and victory will belong to the Iranian nation. As you witnessed that relying on military trough organizing a bunch of thugs in Basij clothes and some hired individuals, and imposing restrictions for individuals such as myself, Mr. Mousavi, Ms. Rahnavard, members of our families and other political figures and activists, not only caused harm for the totalitarians, but also showed that despite their claims of having control and eliminating the criticizing movement, the movement is still alive and has deep roots in the society and that is why they desperately commit such hopeless acts.”

The chairman of the National Trust party by emphasizing on the fact that one of the most important measures at this time is to promote awareness among the people said: “The government media and website are constantly spreading lies and rumors and if we want to reply to all of the we have to write tens of responses every day.  By expressing concern that telling lies and false accusations have become a norm in the society, Mehdi Karroubi stressed: “When it comes to spreading awareness we must most efficiently utilize these very minimum [resources] that we have. Fight with lying and spreading superstitions, which unfortunately we witness the increase of these dangerous  trends every day, was not easy and is not easy and every one of us should try in this matter. In this fight the effort of each and every one of us in promoting awareness and spreading information among the people is needed.”

Former speaker of the parliament added: “I am worried about the trend that would make such behaviors, false accusations and lying the norm. For sure these kinds of violent actions, wasting the national revenue in order to prove the lies of some delusional individuals, promoting fallacy in extended measures, attacking the privacy of Grand Ayatollahs and individuals, arrests with phony excuses, the issuance and implementation by the judiciary of heavy  sentences for the accused without considering proper legal procedures and other actions that we all witnessed, heard, and felt, will have harmful effect on society.”

Karroubi added: “Unfortunately in such an environment the mental and social security will be eliminated and society will  face numerous crises; especially now that people are facing serious problems in their everyday lives and economy, thanks to the world management of these gentlemen (government officials).”

Karroubi continued: “For sure this situation will not last and will not stay as is; and you, the youth, plan for the future with hope and liveliness, because certainly the future belongs to you, the young.”

According to Tagheer website, at the beginning of this meeting the members of the youth faction of the National Trust party condemned the organized attack against the residence of Mehdi Karroubi and enforcing restrictions on the Green leaders as well as the people shared their views regarding the affairs of the country and expressed deep concerns about the current situation of the country.

Seyyed Bagher Oskoei, advisor of the chairman and head of the youth fraction of National Trust party, gave a report about the activities of this factions. Oskoei also criticized the performance of the government and stated that the government’s constant crises creations in domestic and foreign affairs leads to the fall of the system and stressed that the continuation of this suspicious trend is against the national interests of the country.

Khatami: The meaning of patience is not passivity and inactivity

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, former president, in a meeting with a group of women reformist activists and wives of political prisoners while expressing compassion and sympathy for the pain there are suffering said: “Justice is placed in a series of religious rulings; it means that the almighty God has rule on what is justice and forbids from what is oppression. Therefore if something was recognized as oppression cannot be approved by God and if there would be any document with this regards either must be ordered as void and annulled or must somehow be explained and justified so that it would be consistent with justice.”

Khatami added: “I would like to extend this noble view and say that “morality” is also placed in the series of God’s rulings, even justice and fairness are subsets of morality. Thus religion in addition of being in accordance to justice must also be in accordance to morality.”

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami emphasized: “It is true that moral rules is aimed at individuals but community, society and legal entity (as interpreted today) are also addressed. For instance a moral state is the one that honors promise; it means that it should move in the framework of the promise it made with the people of its society or the international community and therefore diverting from the framework of the constitution, conventions or organizations that it has accepted to be a member of is a violation of this moral criterion and is rejected.”

Khatami continued: “One can determine if a state is moral based on its success in fight against poverty and liberating the society from chains, dependence and misery as well as eliminating the barriers of underdevelopment, discrimination and similar cases.” He added: “Or the morality of a state should not be determined based on its adherence to outer shells but rather in addition to that it must be based on its effort in spreading and promoting the content of religion; i.e. ethics, justice, honesty and etc.”

Former president also by pointing to the emphases of the holy Quran to patience and endurance said: “

Former president also by pointing to the emphases of the holy Quran to patience and endurance said: “We need to be patience and enduring in all situations including you dear ones and your loved ones who are in even worse hardships in the current situation.”

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami stressed: “The meaning of patience is not passivity and inactivity; the meaning is perseverance and not to become hopeless in face of hardships and difficulties and not to lose effectiveness. We must be robust and also don’t lose our way and if an individual or a group has a holy goal must also tolerate the hardships of the path to that goal; and with trust in God and without giving up, despair and inactivity and with wisdom continues the path.”

Khatami by stating that “Today they talk a lot about sedition and truly we are in sedition era” added: “I am asking aren’t violating moral, religious, humanitarian and legal values, in the name of defending the values and revolution, the true interpretations of sedition?  And in addition to the oppression, tyranny and the prices that the society is paying, the face of the system is also being portrayed ugly.”

Khatami by expressing regret that these days criticizing the government has such a heavy price stressed: “Why must the freedoms that have been stated in the constitution be restricted and on the other hand any false accusation, insult and slander be permitted or not be properly dealt with? Isn’t it oppression against the system and the revolution when all these is happening in the name of the system and the revolution?”

Khatami reiterated: “Our demand is the honoring of the constitution, acting comprehensively and fully based on its framework and implementing and executing this collective treaty for everyone, especially honoring it by the government.”

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami stressed: “Under no circumstances should the legitimate and stated freedoms be prevented and no one should be arrested, interrogated and tried in violation of the regulations of the law and particularly the constitution.”’

The former president in another part of his remarks said: “How can it so easily be announced that such party or official organization that has clearly accepted its responsibilities and has been and is active in the framework of the system is suspended?! If following up on the charges against the official political parties and organizations is not an example of political matter then what is political? Even if they are accused of acting against the national security or any other political crime it should be investigated in a fair court and in the presence of jury that is the true representative of public opinion and the accused must be provided with all the rights and resources that the law has considered.”

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami added: “Or if any individual with any charge claims that has been wrongly accused or treated and files a complaint, it is the legal obligation of the government to investigate it fairly so that the truth would be determined; not that with the crime of committing a legal act (for instance filing a complaint) individual is put under pressure and at the minimum in propaganda is faced with all sorts of insults and slanders without having the opportunity to defend. Stating and discussing these issues is out of care and even protesting to these acts is also out of care. Demanding an open environment and ending the security atmosphere and pressure are signs of devotion to the system and should be praised instead of being condemned and confronted harshly.”
