The Only Way Forward

Strikes in Iran continue to expand

The strike of gold merchants in cities across Iran still continues.

According to reports, shops selling gold and jewelry in the Arak Bazaar are still closed and are on strike. In Yassoj, gold sellers started their strike on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010.

In Kermanshah the gold bazaar is on its fourth day of strike. Also in Hamedan all the gold sellers in the Gold Bazaar are in their tenth day of strike.

Strike in Hamedan – October 4, 2010

It is about a week that the gold sellers of Tabriz have been on strike.  The strike of gold sellers of Tabriz has extended to other cities of East Azerbaijan including Margheh.  Also Amir Kabir Bazaar, Mohammadi Bazaar, Amir Bazaar and also Ghtran Bazaar started their strike on October 2, 2010.

The strikes of jewelery stores in Tehran, Shiraz, Mashad, Qazvin, Shahroud and Semnan are still active.

Other than gold sellers, iron sellers in Tabriz and Boshehr are also on strike.

Bazaari’s go on strike in Tehran, Mashad, Shiraz, Nayshaboor, Sabzevar and Torbat Heydariyeh

Reports from Mashad say that the gold-sellers’ bazaar in Mashad has been on total strike on Thursday September 23 and on Saturday September 25.

Also on Saturday gold-sellers in Nayshaboor, Sabzevar and Torbat Heydariyeh went on strike.

As the strike began in Mashad on Saturday regime’s suppressive security agents called the sellers threatening them to break their strike.

Bazaaris say that the strike will continue until tax law changes.

A number of other merchants other than gold sellers also joined this strike.

These merchants have stated the reason for their strike as an increase of value added tax.

According to another report, a shop owner in the Edam Square said, “The malls and stores were blocked with bricks and store owners were not allowed to sell anything. They said they closed the shops because they had not paid their taxes. This measure has angered the merchants”.

Also, the protest gathering in Sabze Maiden horrified the regime forces because this place and Tehran’s Great Bazaar witness the presence of tens of thousands of  people who always refer to these places for shopping, and regime is worried about the effect of the strike and the protest gathering on these people.

Strike in Tabriz leads to clashes on July 19, 2010

Tabriz’s roofed bazaar was still on strike on July 19, 2010.  Molana Bazaar was on strike on July 18th.  The strike is spreading to the shopkeepers in the city center.

On Monday July 19th, the whole Bazaar of Tabriz and the streets leading to it were flooded with Plainclothes and Intelligence agents.  They mixed with the crowds and started speaking with them to identify the strikers.  They then arrested them.

Security forces and intelligence agents attacked some large malls in Tabriz and by using iron rods and levels opened the shops by force.  They beat mall guards, and even old men with batons and shockers.  They then issued high fines for the shopkeepers to pay.  Some of the guild’s members were arrested and transferred to an unknown location.

فشار گسترده نیروهای امنیتی و اطلاعاتی شهر تبریز بر معتمدین بازار بزرگ تبریز /Strike continues in Tabriz Grand Bazaar despite pressure from regime forces

Daneshjoo News Friday July 16, 2010 – Following a strike that began mid last week by Tehran Bazaar to protest the government’s inappropriate economic policies, by the end of that week, the merchants of Tabriz’s Grand Bazaar began to express their support by objecting to the recent arrests of Azerbaijani civil activists. Consequently, all shops in Tabriz’s Grand Bazaar were completely locked down for the past three days.

At the onset of the strike, Tabriz intelligence and security forces began talks with merchants in an attempt to avoid a general strike by the entire Bazaar. In addition to pressuring the merchants, the intelligence and security forces also engaged in threats and intimidation with the intention of ending the strike and re-opening the shops in the Grand Market.

It is worth mentioning that in the past few days, plainclothes agents also visited the homes of several trade union leaders (E.g. the textile union) and attempted to warn and intimidate them regarding the continuation of the strike.

On Thursday morning, July 15, Tehran’s bazaar began its tenth day of strike and various guilds, including carpet and fabric dealers and goldsmiths remained closed.  Reports also describe an atmosphere of high security in Tehran’s Bazaar today as the strike spread to Tabriz’s Grand Bazaar.

In Tabriz, Bazaar Amir, the Jewelry Bazaar, Amir Kabir Bazaar, and Bazaar Noor are all on strike. Although the strike started in the preceding days within only certain sectors of the Bazaar it has now spread to include almost every store and business.

Additionally, there are unconfirmed reports that strikes have begun in Isfahan’s Bazaar.

Elnaz Babazadeh beaten, raped and murdered by son of IRGC commander

Last week 26-year-old Elnaz Babazadeh was murdered by the son of an as of yet unidentified high ranking IRGC commander, in the north western city of Tabriz, for bad-hejabi (not wearing sanctioned Islamic attire).

Planet Iran Ms. Babazadeh who was in her vehicle was surrounded by members of the Basij militia; when she resisted their harassment, three agents boarded her vehicle and proceeded to assault and gang rape her, dumping her body in the area of the Emamiyeh cemetery of Tabriz. After her disappearance her family searched for an entire week, covering hospitals and detention centers in the Tabriz area. Finally her body was found at the Tabriz medical examiners where the coroners report confirmed her having been severely beaten, raped and then shot multiple times.  Her body was then released to the Babazadeh family for burial.

After an investigation conducted by Babazadeh’s family and friends, the son of one of the high-ranking commanders of the Revolutionary Guard was identified as the ring leader of the three who raped and murdered her. Following a formal complaint to the Tabriz security forces the three men were arrested and charged with assault, rape and murder. The three men however have claimed that because she resisted their warning about her “un-Islamic appearance”, they got into her car, forcing her to drive to an area outside Tabriz where they “taught her a lesson” but because she continued to resist, after being assaulted and raped, the shot her three times in the chest at point blank range. At present due to the family connections of the main ring leader of the group and his sensitive position, the unnamed man is being held by the Revolutionary Guards.

Elnaz was from a reputable family in Tabriz and had a bachelors degree in Public Relations. Her funeral was attended by 3000 people and the news of her murder has been heard not only throughout all of Tabriz but is quickly spreading throughout Iran.

Note:  We can neither confirm nor deny the authenticity of this report, as to date there has been no official statement from the family of Ms. Babazadeh.  As there is much controversy over these allegations, when and if the family gives an “official interview” and contradicts these allegations, we will post it and retract this story.  Until that time, we will continue to post all reports regarding this case.  Another thing to keep in mind, is that the regime intensely pressures/threatens the families of the martyred to deny /falsify /or remain silent about the  facts / events that led to their loved one’s death.
