Happy Birthday Neda! We will never forget!
Today, January 23, 2010 (3 Bahman 88) would have been Neda Agha Soltan’s 27th Birthday. The young woman who’s death was captured on video and seen all over the world, and hence, became the face and the rallying cry of the opposition in Iran.
On June 20, 2009, at around 6:30 p.m., Neda Agha Soltan was sitting in her Peugeot 206 in traffic on Kargar Avenue in the city of Tehran. She was accompanied by her music teacher and close friend, Hamid Panahi, and two others, who remain unidentified. The four were on their way to participate in the protests against the outcome of the 2009 Iranian presidential election. The car’s air conditioner was not working well, so she stopped her car some distance from the main protests and got out on foot to escape the heat. She was standing and observing the sporadic protests in the area when she was shot in the chest. Her death was captured on video, uploaded on youtube, and seen the world over.
Today, our hearts go out to her family, friends, and her former fiance’ Caspian Makan. We will never forget her, the world will never forget her. And in her, and all our beloved martyr’s honor, we should all commit ourselves to re-double our efforts to eradicate this murderous regime and prevent the need for such martyrs in the future, and to make sure none have died in vain. It has been reported that Neda’s last words were “I’m burning, I’m burning,” and so, today we say that we too are burning, with a collective desire to bring down this brutal and repressive regime and bring to justice those who would commit such heinous crimes.
Happy Birthday Neda! We will never forget!
